I'm new to this list, and to German genealogy. I'm trying to help my brother-in-law trace some of his ancestors, including Adolphus Peter Crane, who was born in Germany (some sources say Prussia, other Wurttemberg) in 1836, emigrated to America in 1859, and became a harnessmaker in Baltimore. There was a shoemaker of about the same age named Joseph Crane, possibly a relative. Adolphus was a Catholic, and his death record says his father was Anthony. Does this family sound familiar to anyone? Diane in Illinois
Diane, did you look in the Wuerttemberg immigration index? And did you look in the Baltimore naturalization records? Also, if the sources conflict on Prussia or Wuerttemberg, you might see if there is a territory that switched between the two states. I don't know of one offhand, but our German friends might.
