But I'm afraid you have to do first some research homework in US like checking census records, ship-lists, immigration records, parish records etc in order to find out the German name and the German birth location. Without a certain minimum of useful information a research in Germany is without any chance.     3. Diane, have you found some of his siblings? Or his parents? Sometimes finding sibling groups works too. I'd find his naturalization record in Baltimore. Or where ever he ended up. The Union army offered reduced waiting times for men who enlisted in the army--the army even recruited in Germany. But this would not have mattered in the Confederate army. There were some German immigrants who fought for the Confederacy, but not as many as who fought for the Union.
