After seeing the various ways names are spelled from time to time, I suppose that would be possible. Although, I have not seen it on any of the documents I have found. There was a census taker who spelled the name Shafer, but there were enough first names of husband/wife and siblings to let me know it was my family. But, I will check it out. Thanks for the suggestion. James On 2/14/2014 8:40 PM, Jane Glaser wrote: > James, could your ancestors have been Schofers? Schafer is so close. My niece married a Schaefer and I've looked at some of their family lines for them. They arrived in the U. S. in 1865 from Bavaria and show up in the 1880 St. Clair IL census. Each census states they are from Bavaria. Their names are spelled Schaefer, Shaffer, Schafer, Schafer, etc. I don't believe any of the family has done any research and the above is all I have on where in Germany they emigrated from.
