This appears as a birth place on the 1851 English census. The man it applies to (John Bernard) is with a man born in Prussia. They are both bakers, or apprentice bakers. Now then, I am well able to believe it is something like the English person heard as Waldock. Any clues, anyone? I know nothing about the states and duchies of what was to become Germany and even Alsace Lorraine. It might be my gg grandfather, John or Johann Fredrick BERNHARDT . Might not, too, but.. my man was always apart from this some sort of artist or magic lantern maker, artist, etc etc. My man might not even be in England at the time, but this is the right sort of age for him to be well left his foster parents in Germany according to the family stories. My gg grandfather said he was born Prussia and Wurttemberg and maybe Marburg on various things. Writing is never easy to read for his records! Family story on a "half" side is, he (or his son) went comparatively often / were connected to a farm in Alsace Lorraine.
