Hi David,  If you know their religion, such as Catholic, you can search for churches in the area.  I did Catholic Ostrach and came up with this map https://www.google.com/maps/search/Catholic+churches+Ostrach+Germany/@47.9485318,9.3673414,10z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!2m4!3m3!1sCatholic+churches!2sOstrach,+Germany!3s0x479a4edfbdf99425:0x398dcb86f5d0dc08 Perhaps you could send a letter in both English and German (in case the translation is not a good one... you can try using google languages or www.freetranslation.com)   Perhaps a church has records back that far.  Some of the French ones do in the BW area...
