    3. Dear Listers, I would like to ask your opinion of why someone did not marry the father of their illegitimate child. This took place in the 1830's in Boehmenkirch (about 30 miles east of Stuttgart). The mother had an illegitimate child that died. That father eventually married someone else. The mother then had two illegitimate children (one of whom lived) with another man. This man never married. The only other thing I know is that he wasn't confirmed (Catholic) until he was 31 years old, which seems odd and he died at age 61. Several years after the third birth the mother married a close relative of the father of her 2nd and 3rd children. Usually the mother would marry the father, but I am wondering what might have been going on with the father of 2nd & 3rd children. Was he too poor to get married, not able to work, or what. I would appreciate some ideas. Thanks, Jane

    3. I've been doing a little calculating with the people in my database to see exactly how common it was to have illegitimate children, to have children born before marriage, how many children were born out of wedlock, etc. I have about 258,000 people in my database that were born in Germany. There were 48,000 marriages that took place in Germany. I ran a report and there were about 66,000 children that were born before their parent's marriage date. It's hard to figure exact number of marriages took place after the birth of illegitimate children because some couples had as many as six or seven children before marrying. There were almost 11,000 instances of women that had illegitimate children and did not marry the father of the children. So there were about 77,000 children born outside of marriage, with the majority of the parents eventually marrying, but a significant number of women did not marry the father of their children. I think you can tell by these figures that it was very common to have illegitimate children. kathy bonnell -----Original Message----- From: baden-wurttemberg-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:baden-wurttemberg-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Dan & Jane White Sent: Sunday, September 21, 2008 1:42 PM To: baden-wurttemberg@rootsweb.com Subject: [BW] not-marrying Dear Listers, I would like to ask your opinion of why someone did not marry the father of their illegitimate child.
