Jane, if you can find his Declaration of Intent or naturalization record, it might tell you what port he used and when he arrived. my great great grandfather's declaration of intent listed his birth village, his birth date, port he left from and when, when he arrived in US. Luckily he applied for naturalization in the Indiana town where he died, so it wasn't to hard to find.
