That could explain why I could never find him in the census - I knew he had to be there. I can't get on Heritage Quest right now to confirm, but it seems right. Also, I can't find a Johann Carl Sterr on familysearch.org - but there are other Sterrs (Johann Jacob) from Neckarhausen. What am I doing wrong? I really appreciate your help. It's me again. Sorry to be so intrusive, but this avocation is addicting. When I go to the IGI website and find the town of Neckarhausen. There is just one set of records, births from the Protestant (Evangelische)church. Here you will find the Johann Carl I mentioned earlier plus a whole lot of other Sterrs plus, and here's the bigger news, a lot of people named Eisinger, including a woman named Anna Elisabetha Eisinger, born 28 January 1842. The Toledo census report showed John Carl's wife as 8 years younger than her husband. That's close enough to be a possibility for your ancestors since the census may have come after her birthday and before his, in which case we would think of them as being 9 years apart. Anyhow I hope this is of value, and may unlock some paths which had been eluding you. Best luck.
