And, if they would retain their integrity if one just inserted translations for the specifics (events, documents, relationships) as suggested? Caroline, the two letters are valid and quite to the point, they will serve the purpose they are designed for. Just be aware that - the letter to an institution (to ask for the copy of some document) is based on the assumption that you know exactly what you want and are sure that you address yourself to the right institution that is actually in possession of these documents (and in a position to provide you with a copy). If you are not sure about these things, you should rather use more "open" questions. - the letter to a relative uses the "Du" form which is common among friends. Sending it to a relative you had already contact with is fine, but if your letter represents the first contact to that person, you should rather use the more formal "Sie" form.
