Obergimpern is a village in Baden, not far from Bad Rappenau. I have not found any reference to another Obergimpern in the immediate vicinity of Heidelberg itself. Obergimpern is found in the Amt (somewhat akin to the U.S. county) of Sinsheim. I checked the catalog for the films held by the LDS at the Family History Center in Salt Lake. There are films for Obergimpern for both the Katholisch and the Evangelisch churches there that cover your time period. I would suggest that you go to your nearest Family History Center and order the film that covers the birth period for your ancestor. Look for his Taufen or baptism. Even if you don't read German, you won't have trouble figuring out the pattern in the baptismal records, enough to find the name Detterer. Also, it's quite likely that your local center has other researchers working with German records who will be happy to help you. You can trace backwards, using the baptismal and marriage (Heiraten) records of the Detterer ancestors. Here, for example, is the link to the microfilm contents for the Evangelisch church in Obergimpern: http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?dis play=titlefilmnotes&columns=*%2C0%2C0&titleno=121729&disp=Kirchenbuch++ Good luck! Hi all, I've been researching my surname and lineage. The Detterers were Volga Germans in Russia who trace back to Johann Adam Dederer/Detterer, Christened in 1730 in Obergimpern in Heidelberg, Baden. His father's name was Johann Esaias Dederer and his mother was Maria Christina. What I'm wondering is, is this a brick wall? I've found quite a few other Dederer/Detterer names from that period and area (just via FamilySearch.org), but no other mention of Esaias. What would be the approach to take from this point?
