Jon, Thanks for the information. I have since received information that Mathias Schlageter was not from Zell. I am back to my brick wall. I am pretty sure he was a revolutionary since he arrived in the US, we think, in May 1849. At least there is a Mathias Schlageter, age 27 from Baden who arrived in New Orleans.
