The one I was referring to in my mail to Marvin Hoerig was not the one which is now part of Sigmaringen, but the one on the "Hochrhein" ("High Rhine", that is the part of the river flowing west, before it turns to the north). The river is also the border to Switzerland, there is a bridge from Hohentengen across the Rhine to the neighbouring country. Herdern is a smaller village just next to Hohentengen to the east and it is today an administrational part of Hohentengen. Jestetten is also in Germany, another 10 miles north-east of Hohentengen and Herdern. The area around Jestetten used to be a special economic zone called "Zollausschlussgebiet" (customs exception area) where people could do trade with Switzerland without having to pay customs duty. The idea was to support this little corner of Germany whichis almost completely surrounded by Swiss territory which used to have a hard time economically. More interestingly, Herdern could as well be called "Maier-town". Until the 19th century, about two thirds of the population had the surname Maier/Mayer. When I worked my way through the parish registers, i went crazy having Maiers everywhere, often with the same first names also, and it was real tough to find out which of them were actually my ancestors. Hours and hours of reading Maier entries... But if you are looking for ancestors by that name, take note of the fact that Maier/etc. is a frequent name in most parts of Germany, Herdern is just an extreme case. The one I found in my large German map book is Jestetten, which is actually in Switzerland. Can someone tell me where : Hohentengen or Herden might be located in todays times. I am interested because of the Maier family name.
