While English-speaking port authorities and others have found lots of ways to spell my surname all the records I can find written by family members spell it as I do. But I have no idea how it was spelled in Baden. My immigrant ancestor's name has come down in the family as Henry Rightmyer. He landed in Philadelphia in 1744 from Amsterdam and said he was from Unterwoessingen nr. Durlach. I have found Woessingen northeast of Karlsruhe and Durlach, but have no idea how to proceed further. Advice welcome. Tom Rightmyer trightmy@juno.com Asheville, NC On Thu, 8 Jan 2009 18:06:01 -0600 "Don Watson" <dwats@cox.net> writes: . Maier often became Myer or Meyer in the USA. For me, as german it sounds like: Mayer (wich could also written as - Meier, Maier, Meyer a.s.o.) Also the "Right" could be missunderstood - Right sounds in german also like "Reit" or "Rheit" ... many options. And all those versions of Mayer are in the Top 5 of german surnames ;o) I also searched a bit for Woessingen! It should be located here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walzbachtal If I could search a bit more for you, let me know ... kind regards | Timo (Kracke) -- ··· timo(at)kracke.org · www.kracke.org ··· Ahnentafel · http://timo.kracke.org Genealogie.blog · http://blog.kracke.org genealogical research Kracke, Wachtendorf, Kessler, Nieuwenbroek, Nowak, Schneider, Olding
Tom, Rightmyer would be the English spelling of the German name Reitmeier. There are several variations like Reitmaier, Reitmeyer, Reithmeier, Reithmaier, Reithmeyer... all pronounced the same, quite exactly like Rightmyer. >From the online phone directory (www.dastelefonbuch.de) it seems that there are no families by any of these names living in Walzbachtal-Woessingen today. But there are several in nearby Karlsruhe, about 10 miles from Woessingen, and other towns of the same area: Reitmaier Olaf, 76137 Karlsruhe, 0177 8 16 67 58 Reitmaier Olaf u. Jasmin, Trotta Hermann-Billing-Str. 4, 76137 Karlsruhe, 0721 61 45 07 Reithmaier Markus, Zeiligstr. 16, 76694 Forst, 15,7 km 07251 3 92 66 80 Reithmeier Peter, Bienenprodukte, Lange Str. 52, 76199 Karlsruhe, 0721 98 92 95 81 Reithmeier Peter Lange Str. 52 76199 Karlsruhe, 0179 7 39 09 56 Reithmeyer Hans, Breslauer Str. 2, 75181 Pforzheim, 07231 6 45 93 Reitmaier Leo, Kiefernweg 68, 76275 Ettlingen, 07243 49 24 Bio Imkerei Reitmeier, Durmersheimer Str., 76275 Ettlingen, 07243 3 43 65 23 Reithmeyer Josef, Am Kohlbach 25, 75056 Sulzfeld, 07269 15 85 Reithmeyer Karl, Goethestr. 9, 75031 Eppingen, 07262 71 12 Reithmeyer Doreen u. Sven, Katharinenstr. 35, 71665 Vaihingen, 07042 28 82 81 Maybe you try to have a look at Woessingen's parish registers for the 18th century and see if you find any of the name versions. You may even encounter your ancestor Henry Rightmyer / Heinrich Reitmeier there.
