Rheinhold or Reinhold (ryanholdt) or Reinhard(t) is more closely related to Reynolds, Reginald. It was a popular first name in the Middle Ages, bearing somewhat the signficance of godly or holy decision-making. I doubt that any of that carried over into the "New World." :-) Don ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to BADEN-WURTTEMBERG-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
Don - Thanks for the referral - I very quickly logged on to it and saw that it was a sight which I want to peruse much more thoroughly. Including how to contact various offices over in Germany. My "brick wall" seems to have 3 names; Rheinhold [on the document I referred to in my plea], Reimus [enlistment papers in 1859 at Governor's Island, NY], and Raymund [on "Certificate of Matrimony" in New York City 1864 AND Gosheim's "Familian Register" of 1809]. Before I am convinced that the three names are all the same person I need to find out how and when he arrived. This is my great-grandfather. What a BRICK! Again many Thanks, Rick Hermle ----- Original Message ----- From: "Don Watson" <dwats@cox.net> To: <baden-wurttemberg@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 13, 2009 8:51 PM Subject: Re: [BW] Help please OOPS! Here is more than you may want on the surname REINHOLD: The name REINHOLD - What we have here is an ancient Germanicname describing a smart person or one who gives wise counsel. The name goes back into pre-history and hundreds of newerversions have come out of it in both surnames and given names. It is something that father apparently liked to pass down to hisson and therefore the huge volume of names. Fred Rump or CompuData, Inc from the Internet 1995 >From German surnames REINHOLD = ruler of council. REYNOLD English: from a Germanic personal name composed of theelements 'ragin' counsel + 'wald' rule, which was firstintroduced to England by Scandinavian settlers in the Old Norseform 'Rognvaldr' [.. over o], and greatly reinforced after theConquest by the Norman forms of 'Reinald', 'Reynaud'. Thesurname is occasionally also borne by Jews, in which case itpresumably represents an Anglicization of one or morelike-sounding Jewish surnames. Vars.: Reynell, Rennell, Rennoll, Rennold; Renaud, Renaut. Cogns.: German: Rein(h)old (also Jewish, presumably adoptions of the German surname); Regenold, Rien(h)olt, Reinholdt, Re(i)nelt Low German: Reinwald(t), Reinwold. Patrs.: English: Reynolds, Reynalds, Rennolds, Renals, Rennels;Reynoldson. There are other variations of REYNOLD. , The variants of the surname Reinhold are Reinholt, Rhineholt,Reinelt, and Rynoll. Hi everyone, I have narrowed-down the birth place of my great grandfather (Johann Josef Strobele) to a narrow 5-mile wide, 25-mile long corridor begining in Veringendorf, Baden-Wurttemberg, and south to Habsthal, located 15 miles south of Sigmaringen. What information do I need to know so I can order the films at my local FHC? Also, which local city archives covers this 25-mile long, 5-mile wide area besides the Sigmaringen city archives? I already asked them if they have my GGF's Catholic baptism records and they do not. Many thanks, Dave
