Hi Don, I have learnt by now, that my ancestors arrived in New York with SS "Fresia" on the 19th of May in 1875 from Hamburg. But then i have no idea, where they disappeared. How can I trace them??? Any tips from your side??? IŽve learnt as well, that Katharina came back to Germany and her son Philipp as well(Philipp maybe about 1888) and the date for Katharina i dont know. But where were they staying inbetween? The story of Philipp was, that his mother disappeared on arrival and all three children were parted to 3 different families, but he came back under the name Maier, but he didnŽt know anything what happend to his brotherŽs and where they lived. Angelika, Do you have the birth dates for the children? There are a number of people born in various German states, with the given names of these children in the 1880 census. Year of birth would help to sort them out and perhaps find some possibilities. Marleen Van Horne
Hi - I am not a genealogist; but, this name 'MAIR' I have seen lately in conducting searches in Odenheim Germany. Through and email that I received from Dr. Alex Calzerth, The Odenheim Family Book, quickly gave me a hundred family member. Perhaps you may find success. Good luck! Wow! I have a similar story in my family tree. I guess you've already checked the document at the port of arrival. Maier often became Myer of Meyer in the USA. It was a common surname. The 1880 census for New York City would be the first place to look. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=census+new+york+city+1880&rlz=1W1GDNA_en&aq=f&oq= It takes time and patience. The other option is to go to the city she returned to in Germany, check the information there in the Standesamt / Einwohnermeldeamt. She would have to report in to municipal government upon arrival and departure, if she came back to the USA. Emigration passenger lists are found at...... www.staatsarchiv.hamburg.de, and citizen's reporting registries are there, as well. In earlier times there was an obligation for citizens to report arrivals, moving about, and departures to the police authority. I wish I had more time to devote to your query but translations keep me busy. Pass it on! :-) Don ----- Original Message ----- From: "Angelika Dannenberg" <Angelika.Dannenberg@web.de> To: <baden-wurttemberg@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, January 08, 2009 2:18 PM Subject: [BW] Family Katharina Maier,Philipp Maier,Franz Karl Maier and Joseph Maier from Joehlingen/Baden/GermanyIII Hi Don, I have learnt by now, that my ancestors arrived in New York with SS "Fresia" on the 19th of May in 1875 from Hamburg. But then i have no idea, where they disappeared. How can I trace them??? In addition to checking out the 1880 census, you might look into the New York City directories for the years in question. Kathi Ott Williams ---- Don Watson <dwats@cox.net> wrote: > Wow!
