    2. Hi, Franz Nahm travelled with his brothers Johann Michael *1820 and Georg Joseph *1823. He was born *1825. For futher info look at my homepage under "Emigration aus Uissigheim" Unfortunatelly is Franz Nahm not listed by his brothers. 3. I know Franz Nahm was born 15 Feb 1808. He had at least two brothers, Joseph Anton born 7 Apr 1826 and George Mathes born 5 May 1828, Mosbach, Baden. Obviously there are more siblings given the 18 year gap! Only the children of Franz and Kaherina Veith Nahm are listed with them in Lebanon, PA, USA 1860 Census. The children of Franz and Susanna Stumf Nahm are all found in 1860 in PA, but living in separate locations. I look forward to pursuing your website and thank you for your help. THIS IS AN AMAZING, WONDERFUL, HELPFUL LIST! THANK YOU EVERYONE! 3. Could I mail the printout I have to one of the persons you mention below? I would really like to have this piece of the puzzle. Yes, I do have Franz NAHM listed as Francis NAME in 1860, a carpenter, already owning real estate worth $400.00! This is my husband's direct ancestor. We also inherited a family bible that lists the family, but fails to mention his 1st wife and the mother of his first 5 known children! I do have record of both marriages, first to Susanna Stumpf and then to Katerina Barbara Veith, thanks to Mormon records. I recently "celebrated" my 75th birthday, so I am keen on finishing this puzzle! I don't want to burden this list with too many details, but I do want to find baptisms and death records. I do wish I could at least read German! (My knowledge of Latin was left behind in high school 50 yrs. ago, but I can still understand sacramental records in Latin and Latin prayers I learned many years ago!) Would someone on this list recommend a researcher to aid me? Thank you for your wonderful input Craig. To get good information you need to spell as accurately as possible. I realize you have no knowledge of German and don't know what's right or not. If a word has an umlaut = two dots over an a, o, or u, you either need to use it or add an e after the letter with an umlaut to show that. You will change the meaning of a word by misspelling that way. German has 30 letters; our 26 (though "Y" is only used in borrowed words) plus: ä, ö, ü, and ß = ss. By using your Alt key, you can make umlauted letters and an "s" set. ä = ae Alt 132, ö = oe Alt 148, ü = ue Alt 129, and ß = ss. The state is Baden-Württemberg (also spelled Wuerttemberg) Last place of residence: Kühlsheim Archiv- Unbekannt (no "l") = unknown Domicile is probably also Uissigheim as there is no Issigheim in Germany. You may get some information by emailing them, but you may also have to hire a researcher. 3. Mary, There are several misspellings in your message. 3. Also, in your research be aware of how names are used. Often (but not always) the "first" name was their Christian name(Vorname), and the second (or in some instances third) name (Rufname) was used in day-to-day life. Thus Johann Friedrich would go by Friedrich in daily life. It was not unusual for someone who came to America to go solely by their Rufname ... I have a Johann Friedrich who became Fred. > -----Original Message----- > From: baden-wurttemberg-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:baden-wurttemberg- > bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of baden-wurttemberg- > request@rootsweb.com > Sent: Wednesday, March 05, 2014 8:23 PM > To: baden-wurttemberg@rootsweb.com > Subject: BADEN-WURTTEMBERG Digest, Vol 9, Issue 58 > > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. 3. Yes I agree it is unfortunate that so often we have trouble reading the blotchy handwriting from times gone by... or find references where the script is so faint letters have disappeared.  Or we find that part of a page has deteriorated or been water stained smearing the ink into puddles of ink...    We celebrate when we find something that is clear and has enough detail to actually help us! Another thing to consider.  Spelling was anything but standardized and this can also create issues when trying to find a name to trace.  It is a good idea to check all the various possibilities you think the name might be....  in some times in history we see marriages that stay within a trade or industry (like blacksmiths, glass makers, tin or iron workers, etc. ) Laura >________________________________ > From: Thomas Johnson <bachjohanns@yahoo.com> >To: "baden-wurttemberg@rootsweb.com" <baden-wurttemberg@rootsweb.com> >Sent: Monday, March 3, 2014 6:39 AM >Subject: [BW] another mysterious word > > >Thank you, Patricia and Laura, for your kind comments which have given me food for thought - perhaps this ancestor's surname is NOT >Baumann after all :)  > >I can sincerely say that if genealogy were easy, it wouldn't be as rewarding. > >Thomas Johnson > >------------------------------- >To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to BADEN-WURTTEMBERG-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message > > >

    3. Carol, From the numbers you list you are referring to Family Registers, sometimes listed as Familienbuchen in the church records. The Catholic church records for Eschelbach (A. Sinsheim) indicate they have such records and may be rented at your local LDS Family History Center or participating library. 3. Hello Thomas, I read BRAUNEN. The 'e' is the most doubtful, but there needs to be a vowel in that position and the scribble there is most like the other e's in that handwriting. The last n in that word appears to denote case (same as in Bürgern), making the actual family name BRAUNE. That name is listed the Duden Lexicon of Family Names by Rosa and Volker Kohlheim meaning 1. an attribute name referring to brown skin color, eye color, or clothing preference, or 2. a family name derived from the single name Bruno. Greetings from California, Michael
