Hi, you can search online here : http://www.auswanderer-bw.de/auswanderer/index.php?sprache=en&suche=1 on "Further Research" you can find more info's. I know you search for Johann Georg Weis, but if you don't know his birthplace, its almost impossible. His name is too frequent (Weis, Weiss, Weiß) -Sven- Am 09.03.2014 15:31, schrieb Ann-Eve Hazen: > Sven. Hi again! I found about "George Blanchot": "1744 Job. Georg Blanchot, zugleich Professor und französischer Prediger zu Stuttgart, f 1770. As long as we are on the discussion of 'Maria' it brings up a question I have. The catholic records I have looked at (pre-1870) have many 'Maria Anna' and some 'Marianna'. Allowing for the spelling habits of the time, can I assume they always mean 'Maria Anna'? Jane

There are any number of Germans with the name Maria. And I recall a large group of German speaking Hungarians - who imigrated there during the 18th century and later, expelled, displaced following WWII, to Germany with the name Maria. And there's the anthem in the Sound of Music, Maria, a Austrian nun. > From: gcgauger@hotmail.com > To: baden-wurttemberg@rootsweb.com > Date: Sat, 8 Mar 2014 22:21:02 +0000 > Subject: Re: [BW] Mary Schneider > > Usually only the Italians or Spanish used Maria heavily. Teva I agree. I just pulled out my Lexicon and looked up the etymology of the name. Maria is the preferred version in most European countries. Variants include Marie (French and parts of Germany close to France) Mary (United Kingdom), and in some places in Germany Meary (I wonder if that was a regional variant?) I could go on with the Nordic etc but I think it is pretty safe to say that yes, Maria was used in Germany while Mary was used in England and in the US you find both Maria and Mary along with a host of other variants as it is the big smelting pot of languages and names. I have Maria going back to the 1400s so 6 centuries of that name in the black forest region which was part of the holy Roman empire and Maria is the Latin form of Mary. Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android
I have researched using many, many churchbooks from Evangelisch churches across Baden and Württemberg, and I have never seen one in which the name Maria was absent. It was used by itself in the 16th century, then usually became part of a multiple Christian name in the 17th and 18th centuries, e.g., Anna Maria, Maria Sabina, Maria Catharina, Maria Dorothea. Hi Deloris, I have found that many of the family stories are not quite correct. I was told my family came from Baden Baden and found that was the largest city close to where they came from but they did not really come from there. Here is a link for info on Baden Baden the spa town http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baden-Baden Now, this may be a reach but there in Baden Baden there is The Holland Hotel Sophienpark Could it be they lived close to this location? It was built in 1700s. So it would have been there for a long time. I have found other people who used a description of a place in a town that had the name of another place and through the years the information came down garbled. Just wondering.... >________________________________ > From: Deloris Girard <delorisegcltd@gmail.com> >To: BADEN-WURTTEMBERG@rootsweb.com >Sent: Saturday, March 8, 2014 7:32 AM >Subject: [BW] Baden, Baden > > >My ancestors came from Baden, Baden.
