    1. [BW] Holman/Hollmann Surname Reseach
    2. Larry and Kay Holman
    3. I have posted here before several years ago and am doing it again to see if it reveals any new information. Looking for any one, especially any one living in Germany, who is researching the Holman/Hollmann surname family. My ancestor Conrad Holman came to Charleston, SC in January 1750 with only a wife Mary Ann. The only clue of him coming from Germany is when 20 years later he mentions in his will he left a daughter by a first wife in "Germany." What does "Germany" mean in 1771 since there was no one country Germany until 1871. He was a Protestant (likely Lutheran). He and Mary Ann had children named Conrad Jr., Mary Ann, Joseph, John, Melchior and Catherine. He had enough money to pay for his voyage from Rotterdam via London to Charleston, SC on the Ship Greenwich. Any help will be greatly appreciated, even the smallest comment. I am currently trying to identify modern day concentrations of Holman/Hollmann by using the German Phonebook (Das Telefonbuch) in hopes of identifying locations to target for detail research and contact. Hoping for Good Luck, Larry Holman Mississippi, USA

    1. [BW] another old record
    2. Thomas Johnson
    3. Hello! I have found another record which I hope details an ancestor.  However, the script is proving to be quite difficult (as usual.)  Would some kind soulplease help me decipher a few words? the link is below - it is record #12 - and I cannot decipher the first name after'eingesegnet word' on the second line of the entry. on the third line of the entry, after the word Sohn there are two letters,  which I believe are 'u' for und, and 'j' for Jungfrau... then a first name which has me baffled (it doesn't take much). then, the name of the village after the words 'Schultz zu'  I thank you kindly in advance for any help! Kind regards, Thomas Johnson http://www.bilder-upload.eu/show.php?file=317eaf-1396529740.jpg     Jesu Juva

    1. [BW] Duchy of Waldock
    2. Dawn Webb
    3. This appears as a birth place on the 1851 English census. The man it applies to (John Bernard) is with a man born in Prussia. They are both bakers, or apprentice bakers. Now then, I am well able to believe it is something like the English person heard as Waldock. Any clues, anyone? I know nothing about the states and duchies of what was to become Germany and even Alsace Lorraine. It might be my gg grandfather, John or Johann Fredrick BERNHARDT . Might not, too, but.. my man was always apart from this some sort of artist or magic lantern maker, artist, etc etc. My man might not even be in England at the time, but this is the right sort of age for him to be well left his foster parents in Germany according to the family stories. My gg grandfather said he was born Prussia and Wurttemberg and maybe Marburg on various things. Writing is never easy to read for his records! Family story on a "half" side is, he (or his son) went comparatively often / were connected to a farm in Alsace Lorraine. 3. Elsie replied: >>Hello, David, I would order the film 912191 and search for this baptism and the baptisms of all of Theresia's siblings. One or more of the entries may list the birth places of the parents if they were not born in Habsthal. Also search that town for marriage records of the parents and children, you may find something. If the parents were not of Habsthal, they probably married in the wife's home town. As you suspect, you will probably need to find the marriage to find the parents of your Paulus. Someone else may have other ideas. Good luck, Elsie<< And later added: >>PS I see the marriages for that town do not start until 1819 so you may be out of luck with that. Sorry. Elsie<< David, you should exactly do as Elsie suggests: get the microfilmed church records of Habsthal from the LDS, Film Number: 912191, on lease. (Never ever base your ancestry on indexed LDS entries alone.) This film includes: Taufen, Heiraten, Tote (Baptisms, Marriages, Deaths) from 1609 to 1819 _AND ALSO_ Taufen, Tote (Baptisms, Deaths) from 1819 to 1900 _AND_ Heiraten (Marriages) from 1819 to 1870 Then take copies of / check all Strobel, Stroebele, Stroebel (or variants of it) entries and analyze these with greatest care and to every detail. In case you ancestor, Paulus Stroebele, did not originate from Habsthal then you should at least find in any of these records a hint pointing to his place of origin. Even witnesses listed in baptism entries may provide glues to family connections / family origins in other places than the actual place of baptism. If you already have a copy of Theresia's baptism record from 1736, what does the original (!) text exactly say? Good luck, Vera Nagel

    3. Hi David,  If you know their religion, such as Catholic, you can search for churches in the area.  I did Catholic Ostrach and came up with this map https://www.google.com/maps/search/Catholic+churches+Ostrach+Germany/@47.9485318,9.3673414,10z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!2m4!3m3!1sCatholic+churches!2sOstrach,+Germany!3s0x479a4edfbdf99425:0x398dcb86f5d0dc08 Perhaps you could send a letter in both English and German (in case the translation is not a good one... you can try using google languages or www.freetranslation.com)   Perhaps a church has records back that far.  Some of the French ones do in the BW area... 2. If you switch to the German version of that Wikipedia entry (by clicking on "Deutsch" in the menu on the left), you will also find a list of all the towns that were part of that County. These are more than are listed on the English page, as the County actually consisted of several parts. 3. One of best sources for historical boundaries and enclaves, as they developed over time, is an interactive map called "Centennia Historical Atlas" from http://www.clockwk.com/ . You can see all boundaries throughout Europe at any time in history, and turn on "motion" to see them evolve over time Lee <snip> > ------------------------------ > > Message: 2 > Date: Wed, 26 Mar 2014 23:48:35 -0600 > From: "Carole Cook" <carolescoaching@broadweave.net> > Subject: [BW] List of German exclaves in France belonging to > Wuerttemberg > To: <baden-wurttemberg@rootsweb.com> > Message-ID: <000901cf4980$31995e50$94cc1af0$@broadweave.net> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" > > Were the German exclaves in France that belonged to Wuerttemberg just > cities or did they contain areas larger than a city?
