Michael, thanks for your quick reply. I don't know Wilhelm's wife's surname, only that her first name was Caroline. I have absolutely no information regarding Wilhelm's ancestors, only that he was born about 1823. Wilhelm immigrated to the US after 1848, since Wilhelm & Caroline's daughter, Ernestine was born in 1848 in Wuerttemberg, Germany. She married a John (gustav) Bischoff in Camden, NJ and settled in Winslow Township, NJ. I know that Ernestine came over with siblings and unaccompanied by her parents on a difficult voyage, according to hand-wirtten notes left in family "treasures". Her emmigration application was filed in Horkheim. But I can find no record of her or her family living there either. Any suggestions? thanks for your help. Barbara Friis

Thank you Eric, This is a great site !!! It's been several years and it took me a while to get up to speed again. In the past, I had printed lists of certain surnames in columns, similar to what they have on the site. My old lists look like they were cut an pasted to an Excel spread sheet. I expect, given enough time, I will again master that trick too. Thank you again for the address. Hi Linnell, The original German title of this book is: Odenheimer Familienbuch Author: Klaus Roessler This book is available in German (!!) only. Please be aware of this before purchasing a copy. A brief summary of this book can be found here: http://www.odna.de/frames/start-frame.htm When you scroll down this page you'll find a section titled: Odenheimer Auswanderer im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert (Emigrants from Odenheim in the 18. and 19. century) May be you'll find the families / names you're interested in. To buy a copy of this book you need to contact the "Heimatkundlicher Arbeitskreis Odenheim" at hao-info@odna.de Unfortunately they don't mention the price of this book. Hope this helps, Vera Nagel, Bad Soden, Germany >Message: 8 >Date: Thu, 28 Aug 2008 09:45:54 -0600 >From: "RON KUNAVICH" <dpcmusnret@comcast.net> >Subject: [BW] THE ODENHEIM FAMILY BOOK >To: <baden-wurttemberg@rootsweb.com> >Message-ID: <001601c90925$289a2380$6401a8c0@yourxu5v9frokn> >Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" > >I need your assistance. Kent, Eric, Klaus, Fred, Annette - Thanks for the help finding my Sterr ancestors in Neckarhausen. It was way more than I hoped for. And that is him spelled wrong (Starr) in the 1880 census. Mystery solved. Thank you! Danke! Cathy
I actually have a CD version of the book. If you are looking for the Freund section, I can make a copy and send it to you. Why don't you email me off of this site at eschaal1@comcast.net and we can discuss? Linnell. At first blush "The Odenheim Family Book" by Klaus Rössler would be about the Odenheim family. It is actually about the families of the village of Odenheim. It is what is usually called an ortfamillienbuch (OFB) or an ortssippenbuch (OSB). The online LDS Family History Library catalog shows they have a copy, but, unfortunately, it is not on microfilm, so it cannot be rented at your local LDS Family History Center. You can only see their copy in the FHL in Salt Lake City. ====================== Familienbuch (Ortssippenbuch) von Odenheim (Landkreis Karlsruhe) Rössler, Klaus (Main Author) Family lineages for Odenheim, Baden. ====================== The village records that it is based on are on microfilm and can be rented. ====================== Kirchenbuch, 1661-1962 Evangelisch-Reformierte Kirche Elsenz (A. Includes both Lutheran and Reformed churches. Kirchenbuch, 1695-1900 Katholische Kirche Odenheim (A. The shipping cost will probably about 15 Euros and the cost of purchasing a Euro check will probably be US$15-20. That brings the total cost to just about US$100. The Christian Ranknecht on the 1880 Ohio census might be Christian Friederich Bauknecht born 8 sep 1857 also in Neckarhausen. He was age 24 on the census. The Toledo census report showed John Carl's wife as 8 years younger than her husband. That's close enough to be a possibility for your ancestors since the census may have come after her birthday and before his, in which case we would think of them as being 9 years apart. Sorry everyone! I tried imbedding the screen in email. It did not display properly even though it looked fine in my outgoing message. Cathy, I just tried it again. If you type in the name Johann Carl Sterr, select Germany as the country of origin and use the date 1832 with a range of 2 years for his birthdate, you should get a three part listing. One is the ancestral file, then the international genealogical index, then a pedigree resource file. The name Johann Carl Sterr appears in the second listing. You should be able to find it. Eric p.s. I went looking in the Auswanderer site for emigration. There was no Johann Carl, but there was a couple of young people, Johann Georg Sterr and a woman named Sterr without a first name, registered to emigrate from Nuertingen, a county southeast of Stuttgart--this would definitely be Swabia--in the year 1854. Do a general search on that site for the name Sterr emigrating in the 19th century to Nordamerika and you'll find them. Even if it's not your person, it may be family and will tell you where in Germany to look for your own ancestor. -----Original Message----- From: baden-wurttemberg-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:baden-wurttemberg-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Cathy Neall Sent: Thursday, August 28, 2008 7:16 AM To: baden-wurttemberg@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [BW] Sterr Eric, Thank you! Cathy, According to the brief history of Swabia (http://wiki-en.genealogy.net/wiki/Swabia), the area was never more than a duchy and even then it was dissolved in 1268. But by 1832 the region was the Kingdom of Würtemberg, The Kingdom of Hohenzollern, the Grandduchy of Baden, part of the Kingdom of Bavaria, part of Switzerland, and part of Alsace. To this day the people are still called Swabians and speak a different dialect of German.
