    3. I am looking for Hall or Halle from Baden.  They immigrated in the late 1800s.  My great grandfather Peter Hall, with his siblings, William and two others came from BAden but I have not been able to find where in Baden they came from.   --- On Mon, 11/17/08, klbonnell <klbonnell@bellsouth.net> wrote: From: klbonnell <klbonnell@bellsouth.net> Subject: [BW] Hemsbach, Baden To: baden-wurttemberg@rootsweb.com Date: Monday, November 17, 2008, 6:10 PM Is anyone researching families in the town of Hemsbach, Baden? 3. My grandmother Wilhelmina Stroebel came from Germany in the early 1880's as a young woman. I cannot find relatives for her and she spent some time in an orphanage. Do you have any Wilhelminas? She seems to have been from Mohringen, which the minister who performed the marriage in 1895 said was in Wuerttemberg-Baden. 3. I don't know if I have any Wilhelmina's in my family because my GGF did not know where he was born, or the names of his parents. I now know he had a sister named Emma Strobele that married a Eugen Kromer. They lived in Sigmaringen, Hohenzollern, Prussia at the same time my Johann and Bertha did (from 1876-1883). I am waiting for the death record for Emma Kromer to come in the next few days from Sigmaringen. Lets stay in touch and see what happens. I took a 33 marker DNA test, but no Strobele's were revealed. I am waiting for the results of the 46 marker test I took 2 weeks ago. Maybe a male Strobele will pop up. 2. Contacting the ISTG is simple. There's a link at the bottom of the page. I'm not sure how accessible or how fast they might respond, but I know they do post corrections to transcriptions if family members find them. Sometimes a name might not be readable so it's printed with the letters that are legible and question marks in place of unknowns, as in B?der or maybe Kub?c?i. The website is _www.immigrantships.net_ (http://www.immigrantships.net) good luck, Madi Bader Researching Bader, Wilson, Ramsey, OGuin, Luchsinger, Bradley, Scales, Tarter. **************You Rock! 3. The German archives will not have the ship's name that your ancestor left on. The only place you will find that is the arrival port. Have you rented the microfilms for the ships that arrived for the known date? The LDS has several groups of microfilms of Baltimore arrivals that can be rented at your local Family History Center, depending on the date. Look in the online LDS Family History Library catalog at FamilySearch. 3. Wilberta, The names are Bernard maybe John, Catherine, Helena and Bertha Kubacki. The year of arrival according to a Alien registration is 1881 but I think it could be as early as 1879. On the Alien registration it says they arrived on Dec.23,1881 on the S.S.St.Olaf. But have been unable to find that. Then I heard the Olaf was changed to the Pennsylvania. So I don't know how accurate all of this info is. 3.     Johannes Freidrich Greim was born on October 28, 1778 in Sulzbach, Baden according to "Lambsheim, Die Familien von 1547 bis 1800" by Rembe.  J. F. Greim moved to Lambsheim and married Susanna Elizabeth Boerzel  in 1784 where he remained til his death.  I have looked at 3 Sulzbach LDS films- Sulzbach, A. Mosbach, sulzbach, A. Weinheim, and Sulzbach Rastatt.  His occupation was listed as a Spice Merchant and a farmer.  Would anyone have any suggestions of another way to find birth records for Sulzbach, Baden?  Would there be any way to decide which Sulzbach might be more plausaible for the time period I am looking at in 1778-1810?  Thanks for any help or suggestions.  Lyn

    2. "I can't find their ship manifest anywhere with that spelling" Try harder.? The level of literacy in those days was not that good.? The person writing may not have understood the language the person providing the information spoke.? I would try phonetic spellings of stuff that sounds close to the SOUND of your name and then look at everything from that time period till you find it.? I had a tough time finding mine and I knew almost to the day when they arrived.? Finally I read the ships' manifests OUT LOUD till I hit one that sounded like how we say our name.? I was finally able to identify my Greatgrandfather and then the first names of 4 of those associated with him.? The fifth was listed with a family traveling with them...they must have all been standing in line together to be recorded.? Later I found in the old country that his first name has 7 possible spellings depending upon who is doing the writing.? I can imagine what an English speaker would do to his name as he tried to spell it in Low German to them. -----Original Message----- From: ToySchach@aol.com To: baden-wurttemberg@rootsweb.com Sent: Fri, 14 Nov 2008 10:55 am Subject: Re: [BW] German spelling of surname Kubacki In a message dated 11/14/2008 11:10:49 AM Eastern Standard Time, bbmay1@newnorth.net writes: Does anyone know what the German spelling of Kubacki would be.
