Hello Christopher, I agree with Toy Schach's reading of the name. The first example uses the German sz character and the second one uses the equivalent ss. Remember that the -in at the end was added to denote female gender, and is not really part of the name. So her real maiden name was Hess spelled either with ss or sz (ALT key plus numeric keypad 0223). Angelika, Do you have the birth dates for the children? There are a number of people born in various German states, with the given names of these children in the 1880 census. Year of birth would help to sort them out and perhaps find some possibilities. Marleen Van Horne
My 5th great-grandfather, Anton Schoch was married to Maria Elisabetha Haes (that is her surname according to the IGI), but looking at the church records this does not appear to be her surname. I have posted to images of her name from Forbach, Baden, church records at: http://www.chrisbarttels.net/meschoch.html<http://www.chrisbarttels.net/meschoch.html> I would appreciate any input as to her correct surname. Thanks so much to all. Christopher Barttels Dayton, WA
Hi Don, I have learnt by now, that my ancestors arrived in New York with SS "Fresia" on the 19th of May in 1875 from Hamburg. But then i have no idea, where they disappeared. How can I trace them??? Any tips from your side??? IŽve learnt as well, that Katharina came back to Germany and her son Philipp as well(Philipp maybe about 1888) and the date for Katharina i dont know. But where were they staying inbetween? The story of Philipp was, that his mother disappeared on arrival and all three children were parted to 3 different families, but he came back under the name Maier, but he didnŽt know anything what happend to his brotherŽs and where they lived. My mother's aunt was Hannah Mingel (or Minkel) Pfister, born 1848, in Prussia. She was married to George Pfister, born 1846 in Wuerttemberg. They emigrated in 1867 to Phillipsburg, New Jersey. I am not sure the German localities are correct - they are copied from other documents and I think everyone was confused about German states at the time. Hannah's sister, my great-grandmother, married Johannes Fuehrer, from Hessen, and they came over later to join the Pfisters. (I am sure about the Hessen - they came from Oelshausen, according to a baptismal certificate). My father's mother was Wilhelmina Strobel, born 1864, 1867 or 1868, depending on the document you read. She emigrated in 1883. On the marriage record for her second marriage (to my grandfather) the pastor noted she was from Mohringen, in Wuerttemberg-Baden. She also spent some time in an orphanage in Switzerland. Her English was never good, and she died the year I was born, so I do not know much more than this. Thank you very much for any help you can give. In municipalities the Stadtverwaltung is for cities and the Gemeindeverwaltung for smaller towns. You can discover which is which at....... http://members.cox.net/hessen/telephones.htm The office that handles citizen's records is the Standesamt. Many towns in Germany switched from church to civil records after Napoleon turned the German system upside down. Others didn't switch until 1874-76. During the 1990s-early 2000's German genealogy anslaught, lots of local church archives were overwhelmed. Old records since then have, in many cases, been placed in central archives for a particular area or region. The Germans have developed quite a database since the early years of German genealogy and it gets better every day. Their awesome database is found at........ http://www.genealogienetz.de/ Here is a link that might be helpful BEFORE church archives: http://www.kinquest.com/degenealogy/researching.php :-) Don

Marvin, you seem to have access to complete information on the Rastatt prisoners during the 1848 revolution in Baden. Are these lists accessible anywhere on the internet? I would be highly interested to find out about any prisoners by the name of Granacher. My family is from the Waldshut area and may well have been involved in the revolutionary activities in some way. Regards, René Granacher Von: baden-wurttemberg-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:baden-wurttemberg-bounces@rootsweb.com] Im Auftrag von Marvin Hoerig Gesendet: Montag, 5. Januar 2009 19:35 An: baden-wurttemberg@rootsweb.com Betreff: Re: [BW] Schlageter emigration Judy Eggers, There were 25 Schlageter/Schlagetter/Sahlageders held in Fort A of the Rastatt Prison during the 1848/49 Revolution. Unfortunately, they are from nearly that many different towns. It would have been nice to find most from the same town, giving you a good place to search for your Mathias. Information on all 25 is very limited - - there are even three that have no given names listed. There is one Mathä Schlageter (male) listed from Lienheim, Waldshut, Baden but there is no age given in his record. No occupation listed either but it says he was incarcerated in 1848 for "highly treasonous activities". Is it possible that your Mathias, (who named one of his sons Joseph) could have had a brother Joseph or perhaps his father was a Joseph. There are three Josef Schlageters listed and again, no ages for any of them. Do you have any other given names that I might check for you ? I find that the vast majority of the 32,000 prisoners were, (when ages were listed) in their 20 so that makes your Mathias a good candidate for a visit to the stockade. Nearly all these 25 Schlageters were from small towns fairly close to a line between Frieburg and Waldshut. I doubt that this is much help but it narrows down the search area in Baden. If you like, I can send you a list of the towns of residence listed for all these Schlageters. Marvin Hoerig [BW] Schlageter emigration > Marvin, > No I don't. Dear Baden-Wuerttemberg List Subscribers, As we begin another new year on the Baden-Wuerttemberg Mailing list, here's a friendly but very important reminder for all subscribers. :-) Sometimes list members may be unaware (or simply forget) that there is a *list management team* working 'behind the scenes' of each RootsWeb mailing list to handle and respond to questions, address problems, and solve the day-to-day 'mysteries' that can arise on a computer-operated message exchange. We strongly encourage everyone subscribed who has any such concerns to contact the list co-administrator (Carla) *DIRECTLY, OFF-LIST BY PRIVATE E-MAIL* to make us aware of your problem. Carla's direct e-mail address is ALWAYS: <mailto:mscarlah@earthlink.net> mscarlah@earthlink.net (You may want to make a note of this address for future reference.) If anyone has some type of difficulty in sending or receiving list mail, or receives messages from the Baden-Wuerttemberg Mailing List which are puzzling or problematic, we warmly recommend that you contact Carla so that the situation can be addressed. *PLEASE DO NOT* post inquiries about such problems ON-LIST. Thank you for your kind cooperation! Wishing you a healthy and prosperous new year, and the best research success, Carla HELLER, Los Angeles, California USA <mailto:mscarlah@earthlink.net> mscarlah@earthlink.net List Co-Administrator, ROOTSWEB'S Baden Wuerttemberg Mailing List
