    1. [BW] Naming Customs
    2. Mark Painter
    3. I have a question on naming customs. I'm working on the Benders of Kirchardt and have found that on several occassions where a wife has died and the husband remarried, that they named a child born to different mothers with the same father the same name. I have found two Wolffgang Benders in the same line and two Anna Catharina's in the same line born to different mothers with the same father. I have also found children who died and the next child received the dead child's name, but these children are very much alive. Has anyone else come across this? I would also appreciate some clarification to the term " grundbauren" if I have the spelling right. The word for ground and farmer, I read somewhere that it meant they were larger land holding farmers. I have a few translation books, but do not find the term in them. Thank you and thank you for the information on the marriage customs. Mark S. Painter

    3. On the naming conventions I have some examples where a young new child is named for an older married and gone from the house older sibling.  Some the births spanned over 20 years for a father with different wives.    Laura >________________________________ > From: Mark Painter <[email protected]> >To: [email protected] >Sent: Tuesday, March 20, 2012 9:28 AM >Subject: [BW] Naming Customs > >I have a question on naming customs. 1. [BW] RAAB index
    2. Hello, Kindly check out the name Appel, Apple, Apfel. Heinrich Appel was born 1839 and Charles Appel born about 1833/34 according to 1880 census Heidelberg, Germany The family was supposed to be land owners and came to the U.S. before 1854 because of the revolutionary war of 1848. I know nothing about their lives in Germany. Apparently, other family members joined them coming to the U.S. and my husband's family stayed in NYC area and other relatives went west, never found out what their names are or how many their were. Thank you very much for your time. Jeanne C. Appel St. Louis, Mo.

    1. [BW] Look up
    2. Marvin: I am in no hurry at all. Would you mind looking up please for Stahler, Steiner and Schlienger? Thank you Walk in peace, Linn On 03/17/12, Marvin Hoerig<[email protected]> wrote: Peter et al, Heinrich Raab compiled a list of prisoners that were held at the prison at Rastatt, Baden - Fort A - during the Baden Revolution in 1848 and 1849. There are 38,431 persons listed. Some records show nearly no information about the prisoner - last name only, sex, and nationality, which is very disappointing. Others records are treasure trove of genealogical information that may even include a detailed biography of the prisoner. Most records fall between these two extremes. I have a copy of Raab's list and have been doing look-ups for people for years. In the hundreds of look-ups I've done, there have been some very rewarding discoveries, where some one learned something about and ancestor that tore down a brick wall for them. These finds are my reward. Here are a few facts about these records: More than 1/2 the prisoners were from Baden Country of origin is usually listed Listed residences are not necessarily birth places Few records show a birth place Few records show an age Even fewer records show a birth date Spelling of names is often different than expected The majority of prisoners were male, but not all The majority were German, but not all Most were between 18 and 50 years old, but not all Year of incarceration is almost always listed Membership in the Revolutionary Army or Militia may be noted Marital status is seldom noted If some records show little useful information, it should be kept in mind that the information was, no doubt, gathered from a single source - - the prisoner himself. This source may have been less than cooperative with the interrogator when facing a visit to Fort A. I will do look-ups for anyone that thinks their ancestor might be on this list. I ask only that you give me only one surname per request. If the surname is a common name (Schmidt, Mueller, Meyer), I will need a given name as well and any other information you have on the person. If you have several spelling variations, include them also. The more information you can furnish, the easier my job will be. There are no guarantees of success but, who knows, we may strike it rich or at least uncover an important clue to an ancestor's past.
