Hello Listers, The silent majority roared. Thank you, one and all. We are back in business. We have blessings from all the BW list administrators (including the big Kahuna himself) to post the requests for lookups and the findings on the BW site again. I had given out my personal email to get the "clutter off site" and now we should change back. You all responded (roared) and the "off site" decision was reversed. Now, however, it's time to return to using the BW site ([email protected];) This way everyone can benefit from our messages. If you send your request to me, only you and I will gain from findings. If sent to the BW site, others will also be able to see the messages. Hopefully someone will find that elusive clue they have been searching for. In the two or three years I've been doing this, we have found dozens of ancestors. The big payoff; the Raab List can take credit for destroying two brick walls. As before, I ask for only one or two surnames per request. Best to add a given name because so many of these names are fairly common. Even some of the less common surnames can have 8 or 10 prisoners listed and if I send all those to the list, we may not be able to roar loud enough the next time. Again, thanks for all the nice comments and thanks to the list administrators for their flexibility. Marvin
Hi Bill, Have you seen this site? http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=jwkrussel&id=I47658 Also although this one is older than yours... perhaps an uncle? http://ursula.foster.cc/page48.html http://genealogyinstlouis.accessgenealogy.com/Buecher6.htm several children of Valentin Mueller in St. Louis buried in St. Marcus which is not a Catholic Cemetery here (I live in St. Louis)... it is Lutheran. Hope something here helps! In case this helps, my relative Christian Hirtzel made the same trip, but from the Alsace. My relatives recorded the story of him (and his family) arriving in New Orleans, and after much searching through the LDS site, I found the right ship passenger list. I think that I maybe obtained the film of the purported year of their arrival (1832) from the LDS, and then ordered the film, and scanned the film until I found them (with a "Hirzel" spelling). You might have the same luck. Paul On Dé Máirt, 20 Márta, 2012, at 12:43, Bill Mueller wrote: > I have trying to find out where in Baden, Germany my gGrandfather, Valentin Mueller was born. Yes, the name is Schreiner I misspelled it. They lived in jefferson Co, Wisconsin. Their home was Diersheim, Baden, Germany. I have a copy of the contract ticket the family (parents and younger three sons) used to immigrated to the US in 1849. > Message: 7 > Date: Mon, 19 Mar 2012 21:18:23 +0100 > From: jonbar <[email protected]> > Subject: [BW] Schenier / Schreiner > To: [email protected] > Message-ID: <[email protected]> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-15; format=flowed > > Barbara, > > did you mean Schreiner. I have found a child was given a name at birth and died in the same year of birth. Several years later another new born child was given the same name. It was the name of the grandfather. It looks like the mother and father wanted to have a child honoring the grandparents name. This naming convention is quite common. Since newborn death was more common 100+ years ago I would suspect this re-naming convention may have been quite common. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Mark Painter Sent: Tuesday, March 20, 2012 9:29 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [BW] Naming Customs I have a question on naming customs. I'm working on the Benders of Kirchardt and have found that on several occassions where a wife has died and the husband remarried, that they named a child born to different mothers with the same father the same name. I have found two Wolffgang Benders in the same line and two Anna Catharina's in the same line born to different mothers with the same father. I have also found children who died and the next child received the dead child's name, but these children are very much alive. Has anyone else come across this? I would also appreciate some clarification to the term " grundbauren" if I have the spelling right. The word for ground and farmer, I read somewhere that it meant they were larger land holding farmers. I have a few translation books, but do not find the term in them. Thank you and thank you for the information on the marriage customs. Mark S. Hello, Looking for Conradt Eckert who came over on the ship the Samuel - August 1731 and his brother, Heinrich came over on the Pleasant 1732 (or vice versa on the ships). I don't have the information with me. Conradt's wife, Dorety Breiling was on the ship with him, under her maiden name. Any help would be appreciated in finding where they came from in Germany.
