Morris: I did a search on the castlegarden.org site and found several Felders but no Ricard Leopold. Castle Garden was the processing center before Ellis Island in NYC. Possibly New Orleans!? Elsie, My hat's off to you for your grit and determination in learning all this. I did too, and it was self-taught for the most part, so I can appreciate your effort. My only advantage was that I started the process with a pretty fluent knowledge of written and spoken German. My point is, though, that it can be done, even if it takes some effort. And the rewards are plentiful. You will appreciate what I mean by the value and interest to be found in the many marginal notes that you will find in these registers, brief annotations which will often lead you to tidbits that you would not learn of otherwise. Indeed, Elsie's article is a great resource to keep on hand. Here are some other sources for learning how to read German handwritten records that you may find helpful: BYU has an excellent German Script Tutorial online. It is free. The website is: http://script.byu.edu/german/en/welcome.aspx The Family History Library has three free15-minutes lessons on German handwriting as well as courses/lessons on various aspects of researching German records. The URLs for reading old handwriting are: https://www.familysearch.org/learningcenter/lesson/reading-german-handwritten-records-lesson-1-kurrent-letters/69 and https://www.familysearch.org/learningcenter/lesson/reading-german-handwritten-records-lesson-2-making-words-in-kurrent/70 and https://www.familysearch.org/learningcenter/lesson/reading-german-handwritten-records-lesson-3-reading-kurrent-documents/71 You can download a PDF of the Family History Resource Guide "Handwriting Guide: German Gothic" from https://www.familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/images/c/ca/German_Gothic_Handwriting_Guide.pdf And this website "teaches" German handwriting: http://www.suetterlinschrift.de/Englisch/Sutterlin.htm Regards from a Roots Hunter, Barbara -- Barbara A. Another thought.... if he became a naturalized citizen, and if you can find his naturalization papers, they should tell you the date he arrived. I found my gr gr uncle's naturalization papers in New York. They gave the date of his and his brother's arrival in New York. I rented microfilm of all the ships who came into New York Harbor on that date. And yes, I did find them on the ship Sea Queen. Like looking for a needle in a haystack but I did find them this way. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kathy Cochran" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, March 25, 2012 10:53 AM Subject: Re: [BW] Immigration to America -Transportation etc. > If he lived to 1900 and can be found on a census, it will tell you what > year > he immigrated. > > Kathy Cochran > San Andreas, California > > -----Original Message----- > From: [email protected] > [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Morris Felder > Sent: Sunday, March 25, 2012 8:43 AM > To: [email protected] > Subject: [BW] Immigration to America -Transportation etc. > > Dear List: > > Trying to find on what ship my relative used to come to America around > 1851-1853?? > Ricard Leopold Felder applied for immigration in 1851 from Baden,Germany I > presume he came to America aroud that time but cannot find what ship he > used > Does anyone know of a website that would give me information. > He did have a brother living in New Jersey at that time etc. > Any help will be appreciated. > > Morris Felder > New Orleans, Louisiana > . > > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without > the quotes in the subject and the body of the message > > ----- > No virus found in this message. > Checked by AVG - www.avg.com > Version: 2012.0.1913 / Virus Database: 2114/4892 - Release Date: 03/24/12 > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without > the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
Jim and others, I teach reading the old script and have an article on the web at http://narafriends-pittsfield.org/gechurch.htm. I'm not an expert, just learned on my own and summarized what I learned. There is a lot in the article but just read and learn a little at a time. I also have a Similar Letter Guide that shows similar letters so that you can learn the differences between them. If you would like a copy, email me. I find the alphabet and the guide most helpful. The first look at the microfilm page is the hardest! It gets easier each time you look at it. Remember, you don't have to read the whole microfilm page, just the surnames. These are many times underlined. Once you see what the surname looks like, you can find it again. If you can't make out all the letters, don't worry about it. At one time or another, the cleric writes clearly enough to finally figure it out. Good luck. If you can learn to read the old script, you will have a skill the current Germans don't have. That tickles me.
