    2. Carla Heller
    3. Dear Baden-Wuerttemberg List Subscribers, Here's a friendly but very important reminder for all subscribers. :-) Sometimes list members may be unaware (or simply forget) that there is a *list management team* working 'behind the scenes' of each RootsWeb mailing list to handle and respond to questions, address problems, and solve the day-to-day 'mysteries' that can arise on a computer-operated message exchange. We strongly encourage everyone subscribed who has any such concerns to contact the list co-administrator (Carla) *DIRECTLY, OFF-LIST BY PRIVATE E-MAIL* to make us aware of your problem. Carla's direct e-mail address is ALWAYS: [email protected] (You may want to make a note of this address for future reference.) If anyone has some type of difficulty in sending or receiving list mail, or receives messages from the Baden-Wuerttemberg Mailing List which are puzzling or problematic, we warmly recommend that you contact Carla so that the situation can be addressed. *PLEASE DO NOT* post inquiries about such problems ON-LIST. Thank you for your kind cooperation! 3. We were just in Germany this past summer and the towns we visited were across the river from each other. To cross the river you had to travel a fair distance to the bridge to cross over. Also gasoline costs about twice as much as it does here. Just keep this in mind when making your calculations. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] Sent: Saturday, March 10, 2012 4:29 PM To: [email protected] ; [email protected] Subject: Re: [BW] request advice on tipping Diana, I don't think that money would be appreciated by the Ortsvorsteher. He may not even be allowed to accept any, if he is supporting you during his work time. If he would be with you all day, I would suggest that you invite him to dinner afterwards. After a 2-hour trip however, that would be overdone. In my opinion, presenting him with a bottle of wine or the like afterwards would be most appropriate. René Von: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Im Auftrag von Diana Church Gesendet: Freitag, 9. März 2012 23:55 An: [email protected] Betreff: [BW] request advice on tipping Hello to Everyone While planning a trip to Germany in April, I contacted the local civil registry office and asked if there was a guide who could perhaps locate and help with permission to photograph houses of my ancestors. Fortunately, the supervisor recommended an Ortsvorsteher representative, whom I then emailed and they have offered to show me the church and the family home which is located in a different village. I estimate that even though the two villages are only 8 km apart, by the time we tour the church and also take house photographs it will probably be about two hours. I would like to give the Ortsvorsteher a tip ---- what would be the appropriate amount in Euros for a two-hour timeframe? 3. Kathy, While you're looking at records for these small towns near Goppingen, could you keep an eye out of any Rudershausers? I'm still stuck with the Johannes born in 1669. I found his marriage record in Hattenhofen and it said that he was a schoolteacher in Sparwiesen. I ordered the film for Sparwiesen which was included in the Uhingen film. No Rudershauser names on that film. I guess he went there to work but not born there. You have help me so much and I appreciate all the hard work you do for everyone. 2. kathy bonnell
    3. Recently there was some discussion about church records that might be missing because they were destroyed by wars, fire, insects, etc. Today I was looking at birth/baptism records in Bartenbach (near Goeppingen). In the late 1630's and early 1640's there are birth/baptism entries for children of couples from many neighboring towns. There are entries for people from Gammelshausen, Jebenhausen, Uhingen, Grosseislingen, Faurndau, Holzhausen, Oberhausen, Boll, Heiningen, and Albershausen, etc. Birth/baptism entries for Gammelshausen begin in 1670, so these entries supplement the Gammelshausen records. It appears that for some reason, birth/baptisms were recorded in Bartenbach during this period. I mention this because if the records for a certain town don't go back to the 1550's, it might be worth looking at the records of nearby towns to see if the events were recorded there. Kathy Bonnell

    1. Re: [BW] missing church records
    2. Teva Scheer
    3. Kathy, the period you reference is smack dab in the middle of the Thirty Years' War, as you know. I have ancestors from the village of Fuerfeld, who moved in to Wimpfen during the same period. Wimpfen had a wall, and many villagers from the area moved to Wimpfen for protection while the soldiers ravaged the countryside. Some of my ancestors were born in Wimpfen, then moved back with their parents to Fuerfeld after the soldiers moved on. I did a little checking to see if Bartenbach also had walls at that time. I didn't find anything definitive, but I did learn that there was a monastery near the town. So perhaps people from villages near Goeppingen moved to Bartenbach for the same reason as my Fuerfeld ancestors.
