Then there's Rootsweb, a free genealogy community, first independent and now sponsored (owned?) by Ancestry.com. Rootsweb had provided until a few months ago free use of the Social Security Death Index, via a search engine that was much more efficient than Ancestry's. Now one can no longer access the Social Security Death Index on Rootsweb. I think the general public's concern was the dissemination of private personal information of the deceased, including the social security numbers, within a few months of death. Why Ancestry.com chose to continue providing access to the SSDI but remove it from Rootsweb one can only guess. Keith, if you ever used the LDS libraries iou would have to dress and drive, in some instances to another town if you live in a rural or semi-rural area. Ancestry has simply become greedy and are capitalizing on recent increased genealogy interest. I go back and forth. I find a yearly subscription a bit pricey, so when ever I wanted to do some research or verify or compare info I had found on other sites I'd get a monthly world subscription and renew it as I needed to. Now I see they have raised their monthly prices, but it is still worth the small investment. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Arden" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, April 02, 2012 4:09 PM Subject: Re: [BW] Ancestry.com >I know 42 or 83 cents per day doesn't sound like much to many people but > when you are on a small fixed income, need to keep a roof over your head > and > food on your table and take meds to survive, it leaves for the luxury of > expensive research. $300 to some of us is a lot of money and as much as I > would like to do more research on my ancestors, that fee is from my reach. > I > can only search on the free sites and would love to know what others might > be out there for those in the same position as me. > > Arden > > >> Roger, I totally agree. Just wondering, since the source of SSDI is federal, is there a .gov site? I try to always use a public library subscription to Ancestry, so my access is free. Occasionally I will use one of their holiday weekend or two week specials when I can schedule a lot of lookups in one fell swoop but they seem to restrict that to 1x per year. Unfortunately their focus appears to be more profit oriented than providing a public service. I too have wondered about the monopoly issue, they seem intent on cornering the market. dc
I know that the public library in my city (Albuquerque) has access to Ancestry.com. For a $3.00 fee I got a library card with a chip in it and could go to their one site and use their computers for an hour at a time. That's how I started out searching. Roger
My comment was not just in reference to the SSDI but rather to the overall capturing of other data that heretofore was free. I am not sure of this but is seems that ancestry is gaining much of its data by buying or merging with other suppliers of free online information. At $.83 cents a day I consider Ancestry.com a pretty darn good deal for all the valuable information they have. Roger
You can use it FREE via LDS site familysearch.org You can click through the links (and see an amazing list of indexed data) or just go directly to: https://familysearch.org/search/collection/show#uri=http://familysearch.org/searchapi/search/collection/1202535 BTW, much of the list of indexed data was indexed by volunteers (both LDS and non-LDS). There are many projects, including German language projects to choose from. The big push is now for the just-released 1940 US Census. It was released by US Gov't today and will be ready to index shortly. To volunteer, go to indexing.familysearch.org. Paul near Portland, Oregon
Roger, I totally agree. I cancelled my World subscription and just now get the "domestic' version, so I am paying about 42 cents a day. Cheap entertainment, and a great way to connect up with cousins, and much, much valuable information! (Hint: The connections I have made via various Rootsweb lists have provided me with far more information than I ever got from Ancestry as far as finding my roots in Germany!) But when you combine the 2 sources, all things are possible, it seems!
