It depends how much money you have, for some, well, it might as well be a million dollars, it is out of reach. They have the same desire to find their ancestors in their pj's but medicine, food, and shelter are just their priority. -----Original Message----- From: Marilyn L. My biggest complaint is not w/Ancestry (which provides a lot of buck for the money) it's with all the sites where you used to be able to get tel #s, addresses for free and now it's pay only $20-30/shot. Now THAT should be free! Yes, it is a concern for those on limited means, but going to a FHL, with limited hours vs. 24/7 connection there's no comparison. Don't have to get dressed up; can relax w/my coffee. I mean $300/yr, or $0.83/day is cheap. I can't GET to a FHL for that $$$ and I drive a hybrid not a beast box/SUV/truck-class vehicle. Home vs. no coffee, no comfortable clothes, people talking loudly ... which is worth more? Ancestry, in business terms, is the big gorilla in the closet -- no real competitors (for US resources). But GWB put the country into two major wars 12 years ago, plus a republican-dominated legislature, at the same time, rather than raising taxes to fund these wars, lowered taxes -- leaving no money for discressionary spending. What this meant, in simple terms was that we (US) went from having a record surplus under the previous administration to a record deficit), as we (US) were spending BILLIONS more money than we were taking in in revenue (taxes). While these (SSDI records, census, other public records) probably should be free (after all, they are -- public!), they will never be under current economic circumstances the US was thrust into under this administration. Yes, it would be great if all these records were digitized and free, but we (in the US) are in a terrible economic position -- caused by the billions and billions we're spending internationally, without any offset in income/compensation -- and funding for things that you (I, many) feel might be important -- like free access to public records via digitization at the National Archives, Library of Congress, is just not going to happen any time soon. That's just the reality. Ancestry is ONE of several contractors now making $$$ doing just this an charging the public for access to these records. (Our government is oursourcing this project.) And (as a 12-15+ year user of Ancestry) the QC has seriously gone downhill as they've done more outsourcing to foreign countries.) Is this appropriate? Probably not. Is this an appropriate discussion for this list? Probably not, either! I'm new to the list so please don't dump for this one post. As to the SSDI records themselves ... we (you, I ... all of us) have LOST access to them in the last 6 months, without notice. Hi Jon Scott: Thank you so much. Missing Link, I love it. Going to high school my teachers had a field day with my "Link" maiden name. My first name is Sally and we filled out our papers with the first initial of our first name and then our last, well S.LINK soon became Slinky Linky when I was not in school, Where is Slinky Linky I guess she is the missing Link! So I have to say it brought back many "fond" memories. I gave up my maiden name when I married Russ SCOTT what a coincidence, I see you are a Scott Too. My husband's Scott came from Ireland 1855. I thank you so much for this information. I am sure lots of people are going to be finding their "Missing Links"! If we all write to our respective congressmen/women we have the voting power to get this reversed. Elected representatives weigh their mail and count their emails on topics. Lobbyists use this info to their advantage. You want it changed...start sending emails to congress. Big business knows how to use lobbyists to get what they want. But the reality is all the money in contributions do not offset a large voter base. I grew up watching this in action. Start sending those notes now if you want this changed. a retreat Hello, Raab´s index is not just an index of the prisoners in Rastatt, it is a list of all those mentioned in official records of those that took part in the revolutions, many of who were never in Rastatt. Towards the end of the last revolution part of the Baden army joined the garrison in Rastatt, and held out there until the Prussians brought their siege guns and forced the garrison to surrender. The garrison was then held prisoner within the fortifications. Meanwhile the rest of the Baden army fought a retreat before finally escaping over the border into Switzerland. Many of these soldiers are in Raab´t index, as well as revolution from the first two revolutions (Heckers march and Struves putch.) Jon

I have found - along with many others - that if you let Ancestry do the automatic resubscribe at the end of your paid for period - be it a month, year or whatever - the costs are about double that you can get on special. So - the moral is - cancel, do not do the auto route. And then, sign up again when it is cheaper for whatever reason. Also check out Ancestry in various countries - it does not have to be in the US! I live in Australia and have six months through the US site currently. I have a friend living nearby who has used England (UK) in the past and is currently using Canada. It pays to know the conversion rates for your currency too - at one stage, by using the UK site instead of Australia or US versions, it was about $50 Aust cheaper. You do have to be somewhat insistent as it tries to default to the site of your own country, of course - persist - and there is a button somewhere, unobtrusive, to select the other countries from. I have never found it, mind you! For those in the US and other places who may find this strange, you check the coverage you can get, and you can certainly still get the US records or wherever. I have currently worldwide - or I could have had just US. Had I signed up to the Australian site I could have just had (Aust and UK), or world wide. I assume Canada would be Canada and UK, or worldwide. CHECK! I need England and Europe, not US, and have always had a beef with Ancestry as it will not let me say NOT US records in any way - and there are so many of them, much of it duplicated. GRRR! What a timewaster and hindrance it is. All that said, I too am on a fixed income, and have findmypast.co.uk as the main sub and treat for myself. They give a loyalty discount so it is usually cheaper to let the auto re-sub go through, than it is to rejoin later. Ancestry is an optional extra and I only got it last Christmas... I subscribe to ancestry.com. I routinely switch from the US site to the Canadian site and the German site. They're all included in the annual price. I don't have any kin in Australia, but I can check that site too. I am so glad that so many libraries offer the option of signing on to Ancestry.com for free. And so they should. But can you build your OWN family tree this way? (I don't know, I am only asking.) And if you live in the country, and your library is only open a few days a week, and it is 10 miles or more to the library, is this really an efficient use of time & gas? I prefer to sit in my nightgown with a cup of coffee and peruse what the internet and Ancestry has to say about my morning questions - on ANY morning...............! I, also, (FWIW) am on a fixed budget. But I will sell my vegetables out of the garden to pay for my subscription to Ancestry.com! If I am not mistaken the Social Sec Death Index in still on the LDS site, family search, _https://www.familysearch.org/_ (https://www.familysearch.org/) . Ancestry has taken over a lot of what use to be free sites BUT many of them would have been lost because they were hard to maintain. I for one am thankful that there is an Ancestry site. Yes it is expensive for someone on a fixed income like myself, but I wouldn't have been able to go to all the places and send for all the certificates without all the sites. I would have never discovered a lot of my ancestors and new found relatives without it. Rootsweb, LDS and Ancestry and the other paid and free sites have all been helpful. Rootsweb had provided until a few months ago free use of the Social Security Death Index, via a search engine that was much more efficient than Ancestry's. Now one can no longer access the Social Security Death Index on Rootsweb.
i just read a few months ago at the Social Security site that if some one wants to buy the master cd of the deaths it cost 10,000 plus you have to get the updates to it too. so its not cheap any more. still not sure about the keeping the records where you cannot see them any more unless you pay. the people are dead but i have heard some of the records have live people numbers on it too by mistake. so that's something else the government seems not to be able to do right but now they are getting money for that info. thats it take care ronald schwarz
At $303 a year, I don't. -------------------------------------------------- From: "Roger Scheunemann" <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, April 02, 2012 2:41 PM To: "'Baden-Wurttemberg forum'" <[email protected]> Subject: [BW] Ancestry.com > At $.83 cents a day I consider Ancestry.com a pretty darn good deal for > all > the valuable information they have. > > Roger > > > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without > the quotes in the subject and the body of the message >
Yes. And you probably wouldn't be permitted to bring in your coffee! On 4/2/12 4:41 PM, keith nuttle wrote: > All of this talk about the cost of Ancestry had me worried.
