The information comes from pages 147 amd 148 of Wilson V. Ledley's long article on the BENNET family that was reprinted in Volume I of "Genealogies of Long Island Families." The John Bennet baptized on 18 Decmber 1774 had the full name of John Van Meter Bennet. He was the son of William Bennet (born about 1741) and his second wife, Aaltje Van Mater, who was the daughter of Cyrenius Van Mater and Abigail Lefferts. Aaltje was the widow of Albert Polhemus. William Bennet had married his first wife on 9 November 1766 in the Freehold-Middletown Church, NJ. She was Elizabeth Van Mater, the daughter of Benjamin Van Mater and Elizabeth Lane. William and Elizabeth had one child, a daughter "Yda" baptised in the same church on 23 July 1769. She grew up to marry one William Van Mater. William Bennet and Aatje his second wife had the following children: 1. Elizabeth, bap. 27 June 1773 2. John Van Mater, bap. 18 Dec. 1774 3. Albert, bap. 28 July 1776 4. Cyrenus, bap. 22 August 1779 As you can see, the VAN MATER connections are thick on the ground!!!!!
