    1. BENNETT....HEIRS OF CHAS? PUTNAM CO OHIO 1892
    2. Dem Bones
    3. Looking for info on the BENNETT'S who were at the courthouse in Putnam Co. Ohio in 1892 to have the land of Charles BENNETT from Jay Co Indiana sold at public auction. Charles bought the Putnam Co land in 1837 when he was living in Wayne Co. Ohio. He died in 1856 in Jay Co. Indiana. This land was not sold until a public auction in 1892 according to the records at Putnam Co. Ohio courthouse. At that time the following people were present, Alexander BENNETT, Charles Henry BENNETT, Catherine M. RODGERS, Harriet R. SWIHART, and Sarah BURNS. I don't know where these people were living. I would guess they lived in Indiana or Ohio. Alexander may be the s/o Joseph and Catherine (JOHNSON) BENNETT of Mercer Co Ohio and a grandson of Charles BENNETT. The others listed may be the children of Alexander. I know Charles and Phoebe had 5 children: Joseph and John who lived in Mercer Co. Ohio. Sarah (md Joseph Frank), Emeline (md Benjamin R. Johnson) & Washington who died in the war. The latter 3 lived in Wisconsin. If anyone can shed some light on any of these families...I would appreciate it. Thanks, Selma

I have Luke Bennett born in Southery, Norfolk England about > 1773. He lived all his life in England. Joan Wright in California I assume that at least William (b 1777) & Lucy CROWLEY (b 1783) were born in England. When mention is made of their son Edward Andrew (b 1806) marrying Judith Burton MUSTIN (b 1815), it is stated that her family was "from Devonshire". In a book written about William BENNETT's grandson, Albert Arnold BENNETT, by his wife, Mela Isabel BARROWS, only Albert's parents are mentioned. She states simply that his father (Edward) was a deacon at the 5th Baptist Church in Philadelphia, that he died when Albert was 18, and that his mother (Judith) "was of Huguenot Stock" (her paternal great-grandfather, Anthony MUSTIN, b 1718, buried in Dodbrook Churchyard ENG 1775), and died when he was 7. So apparently, Albert did not know either set of grandparents, leading me to believe that his parents came to America together. Some people have written me asking for additional dates. I'm sorry to say that I don't have any at this time. I will post what little I have of Albert's maternal side. George MUSTIN, son of Anthony MUSTIN (above mentioned) and Mary (b 1718) married Elizabeth JILLIARD from Devonshire. Their son, John MUSTIN married Judith BURTON, daughter of Joseph BURTON and Anna Maria COMPTON. Their daughter Judith Burton MUSTIN (1815-1856) married Edward Andrew BENNETT. Edward and Judith lived in Philadelphia at least by 1848, as their 5th child, Andrew, was born there. Kathryn Billinsky

She married JACOB CHRISTIANENSE VAN DOREN40 Abt. 169041, son of CHRISTIAN VAN DORN and TRYNTJE SHUBBER. More About MARYTJE ADRIANSE BENNET: Baptised: NJ Colonial Documents Notes for JACOB CHRISTIANENSE VAN DOREN: (The following is from the book "The Van Doren Family", by Wilson V Ledley, whose research I greatly respect as he was very detailed in his study of the Van Doren Family before 1800. I used his work to let others who were not able to find his book). "Jacob was baptized Oct. 21, 1668, in the New York Dutch Church. Initially he went by the name Christiansen, his patronymic (ones father's ancestor), and it was as "Jacob Christiaense, native of New Uitrecht," on Sep 26-30, 1687, htat he took the oath of allegiance there to the English (DHNY I:430). Although then only about nineteen, as his father was then dead, Jacob was probably in possession of the family lands in Kings Co., and as a landholder was deemed of sufficient importance to demand his taking the oath. It was about five years later that Jacob married Maria Adiaense Bennet, a neighbor first of New Utrecht and later Gowanus, Kings Co. That Jacob still adhered to the name "Christiaensen" is shown when stood as sponsor, on Dec. 10, 1694, in the Brooklyn Dutch Church, at the baptism of a child of Cornelis Van Brunt and his wife Tryntje Bennet, who was Jacob's eldest sister-in-law. It must have been in the following few months that he began to use the Van Doorn Surname as it was under that designation that he was received into the membership of the Brooklyn Dutch Church on Oct, 19, 1695. Thereafter in Dutch records he was always referred to by the name without the patronymic, although it is to be noted that he used the English spelling "Van Dorn" iin signing his will in 1719." Hereafter the account of Jacob's life is a condensed version of that given by Honeyman in his Van Doorn Family, pp. 38-59, and under No. 1127. Needless to say, Honeyman's reference to Jacob's birth as about 1655, to his presumed first marriage to an unknown wife, and to his presumed son Pieter (on the assumption that Jacob was the son and not possible grandson of Pieter No. 1), can now be eliminated from consideration. Honeyman also stated that Jacob "doubtless was a farmer at or near Gowanus" when he married Maria Bennet; that she was from Gowanus we know (record 94:38), but if jacob was also, he must have moved there from New Utrecht between 1687 and about 1692. Jacob on Feb. 14, 1697, bought a tract of land near Middletown in Monmouth CLo., NJ, bounded by "Hop Brook, Penn's land and a deep gulley" from Richard Salter for #140, then on the following Apr. 2, Jacob and his brother-in-law Arie/Adriaen Bennet bought a much larger tract adjacent to the first, part of John Reid's estate "Hortencie" near the present Hillsdale, described on "on the east branch of Hop river" (between the present townships of Middletown & Holmdel; Monmouth Deeds H:197,325). Then on May 17, 1700, Jacob and Adriaen purchased another 200 acres from John Bowne, making in all about 675 acres in the Pleasant Valley (Deeds H3:176), which in time Jacob owned alone. On a stream encircling the valley he later built a grist mill which stood until 1829; his first residence was said to have been on a hill about a mile west of the present village of Holmdel, although he was generally referred to as of Hillsdale. In 1700 & 1701 the name of "Jacob Vandorn" appeared on two remonstrances to the king against acts of the East Jersey propritors who declined to recognize certain land titles in the count; in the ensuing dispute on Aug. 27, 1700, Jacob "Vanodrne", Arian Bennet and fourteen others were indicted by the county grand jury for having assaulted Jacob Stewart, county high sheriff, and one other, beating them and taking away their swords, but the indictment was never tried and nothing came of it (Honeyman, quoting NJA II:322,329,396, gave a lengthy account of this and said an even fuller account appeared in Beekman's Early Dutch Settlers, 39-63). In 1702 Queen Anne took over the government from the proprietors and confirmed the county land titles. "Jacob Vandorne" on Nov. 6, 1705, was appointed an ensign in "that company of militia in the eastern part of Freehold wherein Captain Salter is Captain" in a commission signed by Lord Cornbury, Governor, but the extent of his service is not known. Jacob was also instrumental in the establishment of the first Dutch church at Marlborough and he and his wife were charter members of the "Reformed Congregation of Freehold and Middletown" at the intalation of the fist pastor, Oct. 19, 1709. Prior to that, the Dutch in Monmouth either had to bring in a pastor from Brooklyn or go there to church; it is worthy of note that although Jacob had been living in Monmouth since 1697, up till 1709 his children were either baptized in brooklyn or recorded there. In his later years Jacob was referred to as "the miller." (It is interesting to note here that he apparently had no dealings with his near neighbor Cornelius (Van) Doorn of Middletown, whom Honeyman would have us believe was of the same family.) In his will Apr. 24, 1719, proved Mar. 21, 1720, "Jacob Van Dorn" named his wife Marytie, who was to have use of all his estate during her widowhood; also he provided that the residue of his personal estate he divided among all his children and divided his mill and lands between sons "Arria" & Jacob, on condition that they each pay the other heirs a som of #357/10/- (in the case of Jacob after he became of age); friend Garret Schenck & Aria Bennet were named excutors; witnesses wher Jacob Sutphen, Jan Sutphen, & William Laurence, Jun'r (attorney who drew the will). The estate was inventoried May 23, 1720, at #139/6/-, so although Jacob was a large landholder, he was not really wealthy. Children of MARYTJE BENNET and JACOB VAN DOREN are: 14. i.
