    3. John BENNETT (Samuel-2?, Edward-1?); Stonington, CT; 1600s Seeking proof of John BENNETT's origins as posted on B530-L. Several years ago, when I was actively researching John BENNETT of Stonington, Connecticut I came across an article by Dorothy Bennett Inderkum in the Rhode Island Genealogical Register, "Some Descendants of John and Elizabeth (Park) Bennett who lived in Rhode Island" (October 1980, 177-180). Although she speculated that John belonged to a Rhode Island Bennett family, nothing was solid enough for her to publish it as such then. Based on her article and our correspondence, I summarized his biography as follows: 1. John-1 Bennett, died at Stonington, New London, Connecticut 22 October 1691. He married Ursula White (William-1), born about 1637, daughter of William-1 and Elizabeth (_____) White of Boston, Massachusetts. Although his origins are unknown, he may have belonged to the Bennett family of Providence, Rhode Island. From the diary of Thomas-1 Miner we learn that a: "John benit & his wife whiped upon the .13th of June 1661." This John Bennet may not be identical with John-1 because on "The 16. of februarie 1663. John Benit died and was Buried the 18 day," well before the family of John-1 was complete. Recently, I queried the archives of B530-L@RootsWeb.com and found two postings that indicate that John was the son of Samuel-2 Bennett and the grandson of Edward-1 Bennett. I would appreciate references to any primary sources that substantiate or refute the secondary sources that are referenced in the presentation of John's lineage below. Please reply directly to: Perry Streeter (PStreeter@acccorp.com) Two postings from the archives... -----Posting #1----- From: "Dana Riffe" <primus@cdc.net> Date: Mon, 13 Nov 1995 15:33:24 +300 Subject: Re: B530 - "Nine Yankee Farmers" Look up [snip] Material from : "Nine Yankee Farmers : A Bennett Line From 1636 to 1916" by Ralph B. Bennett Jr. - San Diego, Calif. - April 1990 (self published, no publisher) Notes from Boston Transcript, published November 24, 1930 "Note 2417. BENNETT. From papers belonging to Rev. George S. Bennett (now deceased) I was furnished the following : Edward Bennett, born in England, came with his wife Elizabeth, and four children, and settled in Weymouth, Mass. in 1636, where land was given to him. Made freeman at General Court held in Boston, May 26, 1636. Resided in Weymouth seven years, when he joined the Rev. Newman's company, and became one of the original proprietors of that part of Rehoboth, Mass., called Seakonk, near Providence, R.I., moving there with his family in 1643. He died in 1645-6. Children, born in England were: Samuel, born 1628; John, born 1630; Priscilla, born 1632, married William Carpenter, Oct. 5, 1651; name of fourth child not given. John (2) Bennett married Usilla ------, removed with his father to Rehoboth, whence came the first settlers of Stonington, Conn. Among them was John Bennett, who took up his residence in Mystic as early as 1656. He died at Stonington, Oct. 22, 1691. He probably had ten children. John (3), the sixth child, was born in Stonington, Feb. 19, 1666, married Elizabeth Park, March 8, 1687. He was a soldier in King Phillip's War, removed to Preston Conn., in 1709, and died there Dec. 29, 1745. He had eight children. [snip] Refering to the children of Edward Bennet upon his death prior to Feb. 18, 1646, Ralph Bennett writes : "The older sons were old enough to run the widow's farm. Samuel was 18; John, 16. But hte farm came into the possession of Richard Bowen Jr. , whose name appears instead of hers in an allotment list drawn up in 1658." "By then, son Samuel had moved to Rhode Island and son John, to Connecticut. Daughter Priscilla married William Carpenter on October 5, 1651, and died on October 20, 1663, the day their son Benjamin was born. Edward and Richard Bennet, the younger sons, stayed in Rehoboth but later the Bennet name fades from town records." Refering to John, son of Edward and Elizabeth, Ralph Bennett writes : "John Bennet moved to Connecticut in 1656, when he was 26. He traveled about 50 miles southwest from Rehoboth, across the state of Rhode Island, to the southeast corner of Connecticut, where there was a pleasant valley and saltwater cove on Long Island Sound." "The land had belonged to the Pequot Indians who were massacred in 1637 by the Narragansetts and whites. William Cheesebrough of Rehoboth was the first settler at a place call Wequetequock in what was then called the Mystic and Pawcatuck area. ... By 1668, there wer 43 heads of families, including John Bennet, who drew lots for home sites in the village." "By then, John Bennet had married and started a family. He and Ursula White of Stonington had 10 children, it is said, but we know the names of only five of them. The first John, born Feb. 24, 1659, died when he was four years old. William was born in 1660. Rapid-fire births were usual in the early stages of matrimony in those days, so there may have been other children before the second son named John was born in 1666. A daughter, Elizabeth, was born in 1672. Joseph was born in 1681." 1. Benjamin Franklin Bennett
    2. Benjamin Franklin BENNETT: We seek information on Franklin BENNETT, who was reputed born July 20, 1840 in or near Noxubee Co., Mississippi, and died in either Calvert or Houston Texas in May, 1876. He was either the husband or companion of Annie Emma BINION, b. June 13, 1845 in Noxubee Co. , MS. Annie Emma bore two of his children, Mary Ann BENNETT, b. June 12, 1867 in Noxubee Co., and William Franklin BENNETT, b. July 26, 1876 in Calvert, Robertson Co. TX. To date, we have no record of Benjamin Franklin Bennett, any marriage, birth or death record. This was a common name, and a critical examination of the 1850 MS Census shows three or four possiblities. One was a man of that name (age 14 in 1850) listed in the Attala Co. Census. (Job Binion is recorded as owning land in Attala Co.) Three stories have been passed on through three branches of the family: 1. (from her dau.): "Franklin Bennett was a Confederate Army Officer who was abducted by two masked gunmen who stopped their carriage as they left the wedding for their honeymoon... ...Ten years later Franklin found her in Calvert." 2. "Franklin Bennett was elected a County or District Judge in Houston, he was shot to death by the man whom he beat." Nothing in newspaper; however, May 10-17, 1876 missing from library. Also, it was 1876 before the TX legislature voted to create Judicial Districts. 3. "No one new what Franklin Bennett did, he would dissappear for 3-4 years at a time." One piece of data from Annie Emma Binion's father ( Job's) estate papers. In 1869, her lawyer brother lists her as "Annie Binion of Texas." She lived with her sister, named as "Gertrude Binion Carr and husband Titus Carr of Texas." Her brother would have named Franklin, were she were married, as it otherwise would have created legal problems. A second piece of data (Texas Census, 1870) lists: "A. E. Binion, age 25, and Mary Bennett, age 3, born MS." We conclude that they were not married, and the stories were a cover-up. however, he may very well have been elected a judge in Houston or Calvert. We seek any information on this B. F. Bennett. Any help appreciated. John O'Hanlon 1720 E. 1. William H. Bennett, b 1824, KY?
    2. MR WILLIAM L DENNEY
    3. -- [ From: Bill Denney * EMC.Ver #2.5.3 ] -- Does anyone recognize the following family? William H. Bennett is my great grandfather and I've been dead-ended on him for a long time; any help/suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance. FIRST GENERATION 1. William H. BENNETT Sr was born before 27 Jan 1824 in KY?. His birth date is based only on his age at death of 70 years. I have not been able to find him in either the 1850 or 1860 censuses, but based on his children's birth places, he was most likely in either Ohio or Virginia in 1860. Per Virginia Lindsey, he probably migrated to Missouri with his wife Jane's mother and brothers, Margaret, David, and John Howarth sometime in the 1860's. They settled in Crawford County, MO, where the leading industry was steel mining. They lived near Cuba which was laid out and surveyed in 1857. Per the 1870 Crawford County, MO census, he was listed as W. H. and he was a miner, age 43, and b KY with $460 of personal property. Also listed were his wife Jane, age 37, b England, William H., 15, b OH, Joseph, 13, b VA, Samuel, 10, b OH, Betsy A., 8, b IL, and Nancy, 5, b IL. They had five children as of June 1, 1870. His daughter Martha (Margaret) was born after this census (taken in July, 1870). 16 Sept., 1871, Crawford County, MO, William purchased 100 acres of land from Joseph A. & Sallie A.I? Taylor for $1100. (This was the going rate later on for farmland in 1884 per the local paper, but perhaps this land had mineral potential.) They were living in Staunton, Macoupin County, IL at the time of the 1880 census. It appears that both of his parents were born in Virginia (but the census was very hard to read). 6 Mar., 1884, Crawford County, MO, William sold 100 acres of land to R.H . & S.A. Strain, part of Section 1, Twp. 39, Range 5W. It appears that possibly some of his children were in Roslyn, WA by about 1888. He was living at 25 1/2 First Street in Portland, Oregon at the time of his death on 27 January, 1894, but per the City Directories, it doesn't appear that he had lived there for very long. He married Jane HOWARTH on 4 Mar 1855 in Gallia County, OH. Jane HOWARTH was born before 4 Oct 1836 in West Houghton, Lancashire, England . She was 5 years old in the 1841 census (which would help confirm her birth date of 1836) and was living with her parents (her father was also a miner) at Chew Moor Nook in West Houghton, England. Died on 15 Feb 1883 in Cuba, Crawford County, MO. William and Jane had the following children: 2 i. William H. BENNETT Jr was born on 27 Oct 1855 in Gallia County? OH. He was living with his parents and was a miner in the 1880 Macoupin County, IL census. +3 ii. Joseph "Joe" BENNETT 4 iii. Samuel "Sam" BENNETT was born on 14 Aug 1860 in OH. A Family Group Sheet by Virginia Lindsey states he was lost in the Gold Hills. He was living with his parents and was a miner in the 1880 Macoupin County, IL census. Per Freda (Granberg) Bianco, via letter, he joined the Army and was never heard from again. However, the National Archives was unable to find his service files, so I question this. +5 iv. Betsy "Bessie" or "Betty" A. BENNETT 6 v. David BENNETT was born on 20 Feb 1865 in IL. The 1880 Macoupin County, IL census confirmed the year and state. Died after 7 Jun 1880 in Staunton, Macoupin County, IL. +7 vi. Nancy Ellen BENNETT +8 vii. Martha Margaret "Maggie" BENNETT +9 viii. Jane "Jennie" BENNETT 10 ix. Mollie BENNETT was born on 7 Apr 1877 in Cuba, Crawford County, MO. Died on 16 Aug 1877 in Cuba, Crawford County, MO. SECOND GENERATION 3. Joseph "Joe" BENNETT was born on 15 Aug 1857 in VA? or OH?. Died on 10 May 1892 in Roslyn, Kittitas County, WA (Roslyn Coal Mine #2). Joseph was killed in a large coal mine explosion in Roslyn, Washington, along with 44 other miners on May 10, 1992. He was living with his parents and was a miner in the 1880 Macoupin County, IL census. IN the 1889 Kittitas County, Washington Territory census, he was a miner , age 31, b OH; Sarah A., age 23, b MO; Wm. G., age 3, b MO; Joseph, age 6/12, b MO. He married Clara Alba BURLEY on 9 Sep 1885 in Cuba, Crawford County, MO. Clara Alba BURLEY was born on 24 Sep 1865 in Cuba, Crawford County, MO. Per her obituary, she came west and settled in Roslyn in 1887, where she remained until her death. In the 1900 Washington Census, she was living with her third husband George Radabaugh in the town of Roslyn. Clara and Joseph Bennett had the following children: +11 i. William G. BENNETT +12 ii. Joseph L. BENNETT 5. Betsy "Bessie" or "Betty" A. BENNETT was born on 25 Feb 1863 in Edwardsville, Madison County, IL. She lived with her husband in Cuba, MO until 1889, when they moved to a farm near Blue Lick, Saline County, MO. Died on 1 May 1931 in Cuba, Crawford County, MO. She married Thomas Edward "Ed" MOUNTS Rev. on 17 Jan 1884 in Cuba, Crawford County, MO. Thomas Edward "Ed" MOUNTS Rev was born on 29 May 1858 in Cuba, Crawford County, MO. Died on 2 May 1931 in Blue Lick, Saline County, MO. They had the following children: 13 i. Santor MOUNTS 14 ii. Ira M. MOUNTS 15 iii. William S. MOUNTS was born in Jul 1886 in MO. Died on 17 May 1937 in Tyhee, Bannock County, ID. Per Virginia Lindsey, they migrated to Washington State and then to Idaho in the late 1890's. It appears that they moved to Pocatello in about 1909 per her obituary. She was also living in Pocatello, Idaho as of May, 1936 when her sister Margaret died. She married Samuel B. BURLEY Jr. on 19 Dec 1883 in Cuba, Crawford County , MO. Samuel B. BURLEY Jr was born between 1863/1864 in Cuba, Crawford County, MO. They had the following children: +21 i. Jane BURLEY 22 ii.
