    1. Clarence Clark Bennett
    2. I am looking for any information about my great uncle, Clarence Clark Bennett (born August 9, 1888, died ca 1921), his wife Margaret ? and his daughter, Margaret (born ca 1919). Clarence is buried in the cemetary in Santa Barbara, California east of the harbor on a hill that overlooks the ocean. My grandmother, Edith Belle Bennett Butner (born March 21, 1886, died January 16, 1913), was one of Clarence's sisters and my mother, Ethel Mae Butner Hall (born July 22, 1908, died December 7, 1974), lived with them after her mother died and then lived with her Aunt Margaret and cousin Margaret Bennett in Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii for a year or more in the middle 1920s. I am particularly interested in what has happened to Margaret Bennett and if she ever married and had children. Thanks, Norman Hall

Leslie Coleman Leslie, I live in northern Virginia and grew up in Sussex Co, next to Surry and Isle of Wight. I still have family that lives there. Haven't spent too much time on the Bennett line but here's some of my notes. This was taken mostly from the Bodie and Hart books. The Bennett line that I have been trying to trace back to Thomas Bennett and Alice Pierce in through Benjamin Bell b. 1705 d. 1751 Surry Co, VA wife Anne Champion. Benjamin Bell's father was John Bell b.ca. 1668, d.ca. 1713 m. Ann Bennett 8/30/1694. I believe that Ann Bennett's father was Richard Bennett, Jr. d. ca. 1720 Isle of Wight Co. This Richard had a brother James who married Mary Rogers and children Richard and James. The brother James had daughters Bridget and Sarah. Richard Bennett's father was also Richard b. ca 1625, d. ca 1709/10. He mar. 1. Anne and 2. Sarah Lewis, widow of Daniel Lewis. She later married a Lancaster. Thomas Bennett who married Alice Peerce (Pierce) widow of Thomas Peerce ca. 1623 had only one known child - Richard born 1625. Surry Co. Quit Rent Rolls list the following Bennetts: 1688 - John, Jonas, William 1694 - James, Jonas, William 1698 - James 1704 - James, Richard Leslie, Does this info. track with yours? Would love to have additional information if you have it regarding these lines to help me prove a connection through Ann Bennett back to Thomas. I'll check the sites you mentioned, also. Tnanks. 3. Lew Bennett writes: I have just joined the mail list and will be collecting e-mail (of relavance) about the Bennett surname. E-mail of revelance is defined as those to which I can establish a family connection. Since I am early in my research, this will change over time. What I have right now is that my Bennett's are Elk & McKean County Pennsylvanian's: 1806 James Sr. (no record of occupation or migration) 1848 John Henry + Catherine Edwards 1893 William Emmanuel + Hattie Blanche Reed 1941 Stanley William + Laura Jane Lemon 1972 myself + Beth Ann Spaulding (living in Virginia) I have collected a "Bennett Family history" from the American Genealogical Research institute which I will be reviewing this fall. Briefly, John, James, and William Bennetts immigrated to American everywhere from Maine to Georgia -- dated 1600 to 1750s. I will use the email collection to establish connections between my Pennsylvania's and the English & Irish immigrants listed in the history book, as appropriate. 3. List Subscribers, Help! I am swamped with work, non-genealogy related. My work has taken me out of town most of the month and I find very little time to work on genealogy and mail list management. This situation will last for the next 6 to 9 months and feel that I am not properly managing the lists that I manage - B530 Bennett and R100 Riffe. I am asking if anyone would like to take over the list manager duties for the mail list. The basic responsibilities are: 1. Reviewing, deleting errant email postings that have bad email addresses. 2. Manually subscribing and unsubscribing list members who forget how to do it automatically. 3. Rarely, putting out flame wars and list disputes. The sponsership of the list at Rootsweb is voluntary at $25 dollars per year and additional information can be found regarding sponsership and management tasks can be found on their website at www.rootsweb.com. I will continue to manage the lists until someone comes forward to take over the mail list. Please contact me at DRiffe@primusweb.com and let me know which list you are interested in managing. 3. The farthest back that I have on my Bennetts are John & Lucy ? Bennett. John was b. VA and d. in Shelby Co., KY 1820. I am descended thru their d. Sarah, who m. Lucy is supposed to be a John Bennett b. bef. 1720 in VA( probably) and is supposed to have m. a Mary Cox ca. 1743. Is supposed to have come with the Cox family to Cox's Fort on the west Fork of Cox's Cr. and is said to have been killed by the Indians there in 1787. Does anyone out there have any information on this particular John Bennett family? Other ch. of John & Lucy Bennett besides my ancestress Sarah mentioned above are: Nancy, b. ca. 1765, m. 2. I am researching the line of my gggg-grandmother, Sarah Bennett. I do not have very much information. She married William Harralson/Harrelson on August 27, 1799. She was born May 21, 1778 in North Carolina and died April 18, 1857 in Blairsville, Union County, Georgia. I do know her father was Peter Bennett and her mother was named Elizabeth. Any help in locating her family line would be appreciated. Her children appear to have been born in North Carolina, with the last one born in Tennessee, but they all did move to Georgia at some point. Donna Millican PTAgoddess@aol.com

    2. Allan Bennett
    3. Leslie, I am trying to make a connection to the BENNETTs in Isle of Wight, VA. We have been told that there is a link from our BENNETT clan all the way back to Thomas BENNETT and while it looks interesting we have no proof. I'll give you the info as we know it. My name is Allan Bennett from Cincinnati, OH. I have been researching the BENNETT line in southwestern KY and northern TN for the last several years. Several BENNETT researchers in my family have tried to go backward from Kentucky and Tennessee to (we think) Virginia with no success for quite a few years. Just recently I followed up on a query on the Kentucky GenWeb pages for Knox Co., KY and received an email from a gentleman who said he had my "missing link". Needless to say we were very interested but have been unable to get any proof - just some names and dates. Our backward searches have historically come to a halt with a John BENNETT who came to northern Tennessee late in the 1790s. We do not have a confirmed birth or death date for him. He was marrried to a Rebecca ???. He and a few other BENNETTs (Thomas and Ezekiel) obtained land in what was then Knox Co., KY later to become Whitley Co. The lineage that follows is what was provided to us and we have no proven connections for any of it. The gentleman who supplied us with a suggested lineage says that this John BENNETT (who we always called a Sr. since he had a son named John) was actually a Jr. himself. He was born c. 1765 in Brunswick Co., VA and died in Whitley Co., KY in 1830. He was the son of another John BENNETT born c. 1740 Isle of Wight Co., VA, married Elizabeth Sadler in NC c. 1760 and died c. 1798 in Dinwoodie Co., VA. John was the son of Benjamin BENNETT born c. 1704 Brunswick Co., VA, married a Sarah ???, died c. 1783 Brunswick Co., VA. Benjamin was the son of James BENNETT born c. 1682 Isle of Wight Co., VA, married Mary Rogers, died 1 Mar 1752 Surrey Co., VA. James was the son of Richard BENNETT born c. 1645 Isle of Wight Co., VA, died c. 1720 Surrey Co., VA. Richard was the son of another Richard BENNETT born c. 1625, Isle of Wight Co., VA, married Ann ??? c. 1641, died after 4 Dec 1709. Richard was the son of Thomas BENNETT born c. 1580 in England, married Alice Pierce c. 1624, James City, Isle of Wight Co., VA, died c. 1642 Isle of Wight Co., VA. Do any of these BENNETTs cross any of the lines you are researching? If so any additional details, references, etc. would be most appreciated. In addition to the links supplied by a fellow BENNETT researcher I also used the Alta Vista search engine on some of the names in my suggested lineage to see what I could find and I found a gold mine! The lineage that I had been recommended to search begins with a Thomas BENNETT that was born c. 1580 in England, married Alice Pierce c. 1624 in James City, Isle of Wight Co., VA and died c. 1642 in Isle of Wight Co., VA. I did some searches on 'Thomas Bennett' & 'Alice Pierce' and was rewarded with a reference to a home page on Georgia GenWeb for Bacon Co. It is hosted by a Dean Bennett who took a huge amount of research of someone in his family, added some of his own and has the "Descendants of Thomas Bennett" from Generations 1 through 8! There is a huge amount of material (with what appears to be some very good documentation) on the BENNETTs including some lines that go through Isle of Wight and Brunswick Co. Take a look and see if any of the names you are looking at show up there. If you ned the exact URL i will have to do some digging for it. The Search Engines will probably get yi\ou there though. Mary died, the Dr m Jane Houston and had Martha, Mary Elizabeth and moved to Harrisburg, Dauphin, PA where the youngest son, William Plunkett was b 1781. 3. I'm jumping into the discussion of Pennsylvania Bennetts with another plea to those researching in that area to watch out for a clue that might help me with my search. I have a handwritten family history which has proven true in almost all other details, so seems a fairly reliable source, written in 1950 by a relative born in the 1870's. Her record indicates that my g-g-g-g-grandfather was a Dr. John Bennett who came from England to Pennsylvania at some point, then returned to England for medical training, married a Miss York, and settled somewhere in Pennsylvania. His son Hardiman Bennett (my g-g-g-grandfather) was born "in Virginia" (according to census records) about 1775, so Dr. John had left PA by then, one assumes. The family history says John ultimately settled near Cowpens, SC. I have found his son Hardiman Bennett in the early 1800's in southwest NC, just across the line from SC. There are land records of *a* John Bennett (not necessarily *the* John Bennett) in the early 1800's in these sections of NC/SC. I've concluded that I should look for John Bennett in Pennsylvania any time from 1750 to 1800. Hardiman Bennett married Permelia Young about 1809. Their children that I know for sure were: John, Young, Mark, James, Holliman, Francis/Frances/Fanny, Betsy, Polly, and 2 or 3 others. With the unusual Hardiman name, and the probable marriage to a York, I am hoping that someone will run across a record that would help me find this "needle in a stack of needles." I will be visiting Pennsylvania in October for the first time and hope to have a few days in Harrisburg. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I could maximize my research time there?<<<<

    3. I am not this list's administrator, but having some of my own, I recognize the reason for the MIME messages is that someone is FORWARDING long messages through to the list. Cut and Paste is a better option. (Better still, don't forward or cut and paste messages TO the list that had come from the list - check your headers.) Many mailing lists cannot handle forward and/or attachments. Claire Wichelmann goodwich@ix.netcom.com County Coordinator Newton County MOGENWEB project: http://www.rootsweb.com/~monewton/newton.html
