    3. Does anyone have anything on a John Bennett, supposedly a doctor, who settled near Cowpens, South Carolina, sometime during or immediately after the Revolution? Supposedly he entered in Pennsylvania, may have lived for a short time in Virginia, at some point returned to England for medical education, then ended up at Cowpens. His wife was by legend a York, but may have been a relative from the House of York and not necessarily NAMED York. Any information at all will be appreciated. I have much additional information on this family, if anyone can provide a link to Dr. John Bennett.

    3. It seems everyone is connecting good information on this list. I would like to know if anyone knows anything about an Edith who married Aaron Gaskill. I know from a Bible record that Aaron and Edith are the parents of my Abraham Gaskill from a Bible record. The reason I think Edith is a Bennett is because Abraham named two of his children Abram Bennett Gaskill and Edith Bennett Gaskill, presumably for his mother. Aaron's first child was bornin 1783 so would expect to find a marriage before then. Possibly a Bennett will would list an "Edith Gaskill". Some of the children were born in NJ but not known if marriage was there. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Elizabeth eperiman@1starnet.com -----Original Message----- From: Larry J. 3. Hi Maxine! Was surprised to find your query this morning on the Bennet list! Supposedly mine was on there yesterday. Did you see it? I have some questions for you. You list Francis Bennet and Alice as married August 8, 1644, Boston. Where did you find this? I have never seen a marriage date for them. Just a few comments on the children. 1. Mary, B. September 15, 1650, Boston. Judith Luedemann in the "Ancestry of Harvey Dunn " said there was a Mary 'Hutchinson, ' daughter of Ralph and Alice, who died in Northampton, 1669. The curious thing is, Boston records do not list a death date for Mary Bennet, and Northampton records do not list a birth date for a 'Mary' Hutchinson. I have not seen a Mary in anybody elses lists of their children. Personally, and just 'theory', I think maybe they are the same Mary, and that she was raised by Ralph and Alice, and a death date in 1669, would make her about 19, still young enough to be considered 'died young'. I intend to look at the Northampton records again, want to see that reference myself. However, as for Alice having a daughter with Ralph, named Mary, she was pretty consistant with having children about every 2 years, her entire reproductive life, and it doesn't leave much room for another child. Not impossible, of course, but not so likely. 2. James Bennet, b. February 17, 1652, Boston. I have the information you want on James and his family. I have researched James pretty well. He married Mary Broughton on February 18, 1675, probably in Northampton, but possibly in Northfield. This was right in the time period when Ralph moved his family to Northfield for the 1st settlement, and James was a part of that. He is believed to have been one of the original explorers of the area of Northfield. There was a meadow named after him, Bennet's meadow, in Northfield. He and Mary lived there after their marriage, and their daughter, Mary was probably born there. The original settlement of Northfield only involved 16 families. Mary Bennet, their daughter, was born probably in February, 1676, she is believed to have been only a few months old when James was killed. While they lived at Northfield, they were attacked by Indians, and Several people were killed, and the Indians kept the rest surrounded in their stockade or fortified area for several days, before a rescue by troops from Hatfield. I think (without looking it up,) that Mary Broughton Bennet's father and one or two brothers were among those killed in the Northfield raid. Oops, I just checked my copy of the pages from the Northampton History, and it says the raid on Northfield was the first week of September, 1975, so Mary Broughton Bennet would have been about 3 months pregnant at the time. This would mean that their daughter, Mary, was most probably born in Northampton. The town of Northfield was abandoned after this raid, in September, 1675, and the troops escorted the settlers, including our Ralph and Alice and their children, and James and Mary Bennet, back to Northampton. Ralph had kept his house in Northampton, which they moved back into. But just 7 weeks later, Indians attacked Northampton, and Ralph's house and outbuildings were burned, along with several others. So the family was thrown on the mercy of their neighbors, and were homeless for a while. A difficult time for them, and for James and Mary Bennet. It was the following spring, on May 19, 1976, just a few months after the birth of their only daughter, Mary Bennet, that James took part in the Falls Fight, and was killed. Mary, his wife, remarried, to James childhood friend, Benoni Stebbins, and they had about 6 children together, before her death on August 2, 1689. So James daughter Mary was raised by Benoni Stebbins. Mary Bennet married November 8, 1696 to John Field Sr., and they made their home in Deerfield. Mary and John Field had 6 children, and if you want all the dates, and the stories that go with it about their being part of the Indian Raid on Deerfield in 1704, I can send that as well. James Bennet's only descendants are through his grandchildren by John Field and Mary Bennet Field. 3. Elizabeth, died November 17, 1653, Boston. This is listed in the Boston Vital Records, and there is no birth date for her there. I personally suspect that she may have been their first daughter, born ca 1647-48, and died November 17, 1653. I do not think that the records for the 2 Elizabeths reflect the birth and death dates of one child. The death record for the first Elizabeth is before the birth record for the 2nd Elizabeth, page numbers in the records are different, and I think we should interpret it just the way it reads. 4. Elizabeth, born December 20, 1654, Boston. I believe that this Elizabeth was named after her deceased sister. She married about 1675 to Benjamin Hurd, place unknown. I am going to look for this in Northampton records when I go through them, as well. They had a daughter, born in 1677 (I have the exact birth date someplace) named Elizabeth Hurd. I think she was born in Boston. Benjamin lived in Boston, according to what I have seen. Benjamin Hurd wrote his will in November 7, 1678, in which he refered to his wife Elizabeth, daughter Elizabeth, and the child she goes with (which I interpreted to mean she was pregnant again. ) He was quite young, in his 20's, to be writing a will, so must have been an accident, or he died of illness. His will was probated (or estate appraised, not sure which) in February, 1678/9, so he died soon after he wrote the will. The curious thing is, in February, it says his wife was dead, and only heir was daughter Elizabeth Hurd. So, did she die in child birth, or perhaps of the same illness that Benjamin died of, if it was an illness? We'll never know. In 1697, John and Mary Field of Deerfield, and Elizabeth Hurd, of Boston, sole heirs to estate of Francis Bennet, sold land in Boston. I interpreted this to mean that the land they sold had belonged to Francis and was theirs as the only heirs, when they sold it. I want to find out if Elizabeth Hurd married, and had a family. Need to see if I can find that in Boston Records, or in a Hurd genealogy. Hope this helps with information on Francis's children. I'll let you know if I get any responses from my query, and hope you will do the same! Sandy Neil

    1. BENNET, Francis (1623-1655) Boston, Massachusetts
    2. Larry J. Neil
    3. I am looking for information about the parentage of Francis BENNET, born abt 1623, probably England, and about his wife Alice, surname unknown, parentage unknown, born before 1630, England or Massachusetts, and about their children. Francis BENNET married Alice before 1650, probably between 1646 and 1649, place unknown. They had 4 children: 1. Elizabeth, birth date unknown, place unknown. The other 3 children were born in Boston, but the only record for this Elizabeth is a death date in the Boston records, died November 17, 1653. She might have been born before they arrived at Boston, their first child, born about 1647-48. 2. Mary, born July 15, 1650, in Boston, Massachusetts. Early source books say she died young. There is no death date for her in the Boston Records. After her father's death, her mother remarried, to Ralph Hutchinson, and they moved to Northampton, MA, by 1660. There is a record in Northampton of the death of a Mary Hutchinson, daughter of Ralph and Alice, in 1669, but the Northampton records do not list a birth date. I speculate that this might be Mary, born 1650, who died in 1669. 3. James, born February 17, 1652, Boston, MA. James went to Northampton with his mother and step-father. He married February 18, 1675, in Northampton, Mary Broughton. They had 1 daughter, Mary Bennet, born February, 1676, in either Northfield or Northampton. James died May 19, 1676, near Northampton, killed by Indians in the Falls Fight. His wife, Mary, married 2nd Benoni Stebbins, and had several children with him, then died in August 2, 1689. James daughter Mary married John Field, and lived in Deerfield, MA. She and John had 6 children. Mary Field and her oldest daughter, Mary, age 6, and son John, age 3 , were captured by Indians in the Deerfield raid, February 29, 1704, and forced to march to Canada along with many other captives. The following year, Mary and son John were rescued, but daughter Mary had been adopted by Indians, and stayed in Canada. An infant daughter, Sarah, was killed by the indians in the Deerfield raid. After Mary returned, she and John had 3 more children, sons Pedajah, b. 1707, Bennett, b. 1709, and daughter, Sarah, b. 1712. James Bennet's only descendants are through daughter Mary's children, surname Field. 4. Elizabeth, b. December 20, 1654, Boston, MA. It has been recently discovered that this Elizabeth married Benjamin Hurd, of Boston, about 1675. The marriage did not take place in Boston, but may have taken place in Northampton. But they lived in Boston afterwards. Benjamin and Mary had one daughter, Elizabeth Hurd, b. 1676. Benjamin wrote his will November 7, 1678, mentioning his wife Elizabeth, daughter Elizabeth, and the child she was apparently carrying, and died soon after. However by February of 1679, when his will was probated, his wife Elizabeth had died also, and the only heir was daughter, Elizabeth Hurd. This Elizabeth Hurd was living in 1697, when she and her cousin Mary Field (and Mary's husband John) sold their Grandfather's land in Boston. I would like to know if this Elizabeth Hurd married and had children. She was apparently not married at the time of the sale. Does anyone out there know anything about Elizabeth? Francis died December 4, 1655, drowning off Noodle's Island. Alice was granted the administration of the estate for herself and the children in February, 1655/56. She married second to Ralph Hutchinson, August 8, 1656, in Boston. Ralph and Alice had the following children, all surnamed Hutchinson: 1. John, b. 1657/58, probably Boston. 2. Mercy, b. Feb. 1660, Dorchester, MA, d. April 26, 1662, Northampton, MA 3. Mehitable, b. May 21, 1662, Northampton, MA, d. June 24, 1663, Northampton, MA. 4. Judah, b. April, 15, 1664, Northampton, MA, died Jan. 5, 1741, Northampton, MA 5. Samuel, b. July 21, 1666, Northampton, MA, died April 17, 1657, Lebanon, CT. 6. Eleazer, b. May 31, 1668, Northampton, MA, died May 16, 1669, Northampton, MA 7. Moses, b. September 18, 1671, Northampton, MA, died May 13, 1704, Passcomuck, MA, killed by Indians. I have good information about Alice's children by Ralph Hutchinson, including marriages, children, and grandchildren. Alice remains a mystery woman. 2 theories have been circulating about her parentage. One, that she is daughter of William Walcott and his wife Alice Ingersoll, of Salem, MA. This has never been proven, and all research into William Walcott does not show a daughter named Alice. Second, that she was the daughter of Robert Leach and Alice, who married second, Robert Elwell, thus her name is shown by some as Alice Leach Elwell. This theory has been almost certainly proven wrong. Robert Leach married 1st, a Joana in late 1630's, they had several children, no Alice. After his first wifes death, he married second, Alice, about 1649 or 1650. They had probably 7 children. Robert Leach died in 1670's, and Alice married Robert Elwell. No children. Robert Elwell died in 1680's. Alice Leach Elwell died in 1691, leaving a will mentioning 2 sons, and 5 daughters, apparently all from her marriage to Robert Leach, and all children born after 1650. However, in her will, she mentioned a daughter, Alice Bennett, and thus many people have jumped to the conclusion that this was the Alice who married Francis Bennet, and later Ralph Hutchinson. A simple look at the dates for children born to Robert Leach and Alice shows that all their children were born between 1650 and late 1660's, therefore a daughter cannot be our Alice, who was certainly born before 1630. I have searched for immigration records for Francis Bennet, and can find nothing. Would like to know his parentage, when he immigrated, and when and where he and Alice married, also Alice's parentage, if possible. It is possible they married in England before immigration. Does anybody have any information about Francis BENNET? You can e-mail me at lniel@gte.net. Any help would be appreciated! Sandy Neil

    2. Pam Forbush
    3. Just came across family bible pages that gave my earlier Bennett ancestors two t's and some more names to hopefully connect with some one. Jacob Bennett and wife Charlotte born probably mid 1700's had Whitman R. Bennett 15 Sep 179r in Lower Dublin Township, Philadelphia. Whitman married Cornelia Vardike 16 Oct 1817 at the Presbyterian church in Ablington, Montgomery County, PA. They had the following children between 1818 and 1841 all born in PA. William (died at 1 year), William V. (my ancestor), Clarinda, Albanus L. Reuben V. Herbert, Whitman R., John A and Thomas Reading. William V. Bennet (dropped the t on his marriage certificate) married Emily Brittin, born about 1828, and had three daugthers. The middle being Emily born 15 Jun 1859. Thomas Reading Bennett, William's youngest brother, married a Mary Jane Brittin, born 3 May 1842 and they had only one daughter Laura Bennett. Does this sound familar to anyone? Since all this was in the family bible do you think it is probable that Emily Brittin and Laura Brittin were related???? Thanks. Pam Forbush

    3. I am interested in Bennet's and Bennett's living in the in Clermont/Hamilton County Ohio area between 1800 and 1900. The Bennet single "t" spelling appears more frequently in the early 1800's and then seems to gain an addition "t". The family is believed to have come from the Massachusetts area.
