I am a new list member from Tennessee. My family of BENNETTs are very stubborn and I am having no luck in my research. Edward Marshall Bennett, Sr. was killed in a rock fall in a coal mines in Morgan, Co. TN around 1917. Death certificates were not required in TN at that time. There was no local newspaper that I can find in that time period. Where can I look for more information on his death and this accident? He is as far back on my side as I can get and that is frustrating. With more info on his death, I hope I can find info on his parents or siblings. Rumor in my family has it that his father also died in a mining accident. Thank you. Suzanne (in Tennessee)
Charles BENNETT was born somewhere in NJ abt 1801. I believe he had a brother, Lindsey born abt 1793 and a brother, Aaron b.between 1804-1810. The BENNETT family moved into Wayne Co. Ohio by 1820. Charles was md to Phoebe ___ abt 1821. They lived in Wayne Co. until the mid 1840's then moved to Jay Co. Ind. where Charles died in 1856. Phoebe and 3 of their children moved on into Wis by 1865. I was told that Thomas Bennett and Nancy Sinks came to LA from GA , then left for MS , and returned to LA before 1850. Thomas was listed as a Registrar of U.S. Land in 1860 census, St. Helena Parish, LA. I was also told that Thomas Bennett was possibly a child of Reuben Bennett, Jr. b. 1786, d. 6 Dec. 1838 , m. 14 Feb 1804 , to Sarah " Sally " Robertson, b. 1786, daughter of David Robertson, Sr. , ( 1730-1806) and his second wife. I was told that Reuben and Sarah were married in Clarke County , GA by M. Kenton , Justice of the Peace, and that they moved to LA by 1812- 1818. Can anyone verify whether or not Reuben Bennett , Jr. and Sarah Robertson are really the parents of my Thomas Bennett. ? Reuben Bennett , Sr. and Elizabeth ( Mary " Peachy " ) Tarpley are Reuben Bennett, Jr's parents. My source says that Elizabeth Tarpley was the daughter of Col. James Tarpley of VA. Were they both from VA , and if so, what part of VA and where else did they live ? Any details such as dates, specific counties and states they lived in would be greatly appreciated .

The information comes from pages 147 amd 148 of Wilson V. Ledley's long article on the BENNET family that was reprinted in Volume I of "Genealogies of Long Island Families." The John Bennet baptized on 18 Decmber 1774 had the full name of John Van Meter Bennet. He was the son of William Bennet (born about 1741) and his second wife, Aaltje Van Mater, who was the daughter of Cyrenius Van Mater and Abigail Lefferts. Aaltje was the widow of Albert Polhemus. William Bennet had married his first wife on 9 November 1766 in the Freehold-Middletown Church, NJ. She was Elizabeth Van Mater, the daughter of Benjamin Van Mater and Elizabeth Lane. William and Elizabeth had one child, a daughter "Yda" baptised in the same church on 23 July 1769. She grew up to marry one William Van Mater. William Bennet and Aatje his second wife had the following children: 1. Elizabeth, bap. 27 June 1773 2. John Van Mater, bap. 18 Dec. 1774 3. Albert, bap. 28 July 1776 4. Cyrenus, bap. 22 August 1779 As you can see, the VAN MATER connections are thick on the ground!!!!! Francis M. Bennet married Frances (aka Nancy) McKelvy 26 Nov 1857 in Franklin Co, TN. They had six children before Francis (aka Frank) died circa 1878/79: Jackson (aka Grover) b. ca 1860, Charlotte Malinda b. ca 1854, Ida M. b.1868, Jarrid b. ca 1871, Sarah b. ca 1874, Mary E. b. ca 1878. Nancy, a widow and the five younger children are living in Linclon Co, TN by 1880 (per census report). Charlotte M. married Robert Kelly Norman of Lincoln Co, TN and Ida M. married his brother George W. Norman. The Normans lived in Madison Co, AL (New Market area). I am trying to locate Francis (aka Frank) M. (or N.) Bennet's parents. I thought his father was John M. Bennet of Franklin Co but have since learned that another Francis Marion Bennett can claim that ancestry.Does anyone recognize this family? I would be grateful for any information...
