Kempton Albert Lafayette Kempton, 74, died Jan. 1, 2002, at the Sunbridge Brittany Care Center in Carmichael. Born in Gilbert, Ariz., he was a Yuba-Sutter resident for 22 years and formerly lived in Davis for 17 years. He attended Yuba College and earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Chico State University. He began his 34-year career in education as a teacher in Yuba City. He taught briefly in Loomis, and later was a school principal in Red Bluff and superintendent of Dunsmuir Elementary School. He retired from the state Department of Education in 1985. He served in the U.S. Army in 1946-47, and retired as a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserve in 1987. He was an active member of the Rotary Club in Red Bluff and Dunsmuir, and served as a unit commissioner for the Buttes Area Council of Boy Scouts of America. He was an avid golfer and played church league softball for years. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and once served as branch president, working with the Hmong families in Marysville. He and his wife served an 18-month mission in Kane, Pa. His wife of 53 years, Pauline Nichols, passed away on July 22, 1999. He is survived by two daughters, Chris Brunner of Davis and Paula McDougall of Greenville, S.C.; a son, Marc Kempton of Citrus Heights; one sister, LaFon Dodge of Chandler, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at Ullrey Memorial Chapel, 817 Almond St. in Yuba City. A service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Stake Center on Butte House Road in Yuba City, followed by burial at Wheatland Cemetery.
