Harvey and Maud Angeline Harvey Spencer. There were half siblings as well with the last name of Raymond from Millsfield, NH. I do not know where Maude resided but all the remainder of this family in that generation remained in New England. From the letter that George Harvey's widow wrote to his children I think there was at least a son Kenneth. I live in Mesa, so decided to drive by the address you requested. This is a mobile home park, mostly single-wide dwellings. I would call it perhaps a "lower-income" area. It is called Royal Palm Village. I didn't stop to inquire or look at the names on the mailboxes for your Baldwin at that time. There was no Arthur Baldwin listed in our current Mesa phone directory. According to Joe McCulloch's obituary and that of his mother, Joe was in Arizona when his mum died in 1949. He retired as a male nurse at Good Samaritan in 1961, after 10 years' service, and then lived in Ontario, Canada, for 3 years before his death in 1964. His wife was born Elizabeth Hamilton Speirs...Joe was her second husband...her first was Joseph Cunliffe. She died in 1959 (in Phoenix?) They had only one child, as far as I know...she was Ida Mae born 1930 (the name, Ida Mabel, came from a lady in Canada, whom I have been working with.....she is related to Joe's wife ). In Joe's obit, his daughter is described as "Mrs Richard N (Ida Mae) Westcot(sic) of Omaha, Neb"...I presumed, therefore, that in 1964 she and her husband were living there. Joe's obit also lists one granddaughter...again I have assumed, as yet, that this is the daughter of Ida Mae. BALDWIN of Apache Junction is likely to be your research subject. My next earliest public record is the 1975 Phoenix metro phone book which includes Apache Junction also. There is no listing for a Shirley VALENTINE or any other derivative of the VALENTINE surname as a Shirley or "S.". There were also no Shirley RICHARDS listed in the '75 directory nor is there a Arthur Henry BALDWIN Sr. In my CD phone books, I found the following entries. First there was no entry for Arthur Henry BALDWIN Sr. or any derivative thereof for 1995, 1996 and 1998 published CD's. These CD's usually represent information compiled in the year prior. However, I did find some interesting listings for Shirley BALDWIN. First the 1998 Edition finds a Shirley BALDWIN residing at Bullhead City (?county?), Arizona (AZ), phone 520-763-7771. In the 1995 Edition there is also a Shirley BALDWIN residing at West Ray Road, Chandler (town just south of Mesa and Apache Junction) at 602-963-4887. The area code 602 is now Phoenix only, so Chandler would probably be 480 instead. This may not be your Shirley BALDWIN as you indicated she and Arthur Henry BALDWIN Sr. did not marry until 1997. Then in the 1996 Edition there is a S. BALDWIN residing at 1429 West Ray Road, Chandler, phone 602-963-4887. This S. BALDWIN appears to be the same as Shirley BALDWIN as they share the same phone number and street. There is no Shirley BALDWIN in Chandler in 1998. Linda there is no Shirley or the initial "S.", "S.J.", "J." or any given name that starts with a "J." that is in the 2002 metro phone book (for Apache Junction). The book does include Apache Junction and none of the above noted name or initial combinations are noted as being for a Apache Junction householder. However, there is one interesting listing that reads: "Baldwin S.C., South Prospectors Road, Apache Junction, 480-982-1878". There is no way to know if this is your research subject, particularly given the fact that the middle initial is a "C." and not a "J.", but perhaps the "C." represents her maiden name initial. Do you know her maiden name? Either way, a quick phone call may be all that is needed to confirm or eliminate. I found no Ida Mae/Mabel MCCULLOCH or WESTCOT in the '45 or '47 directory, but I found the following listing in the 1955 directory, page 1582, right column: "Westcot Mabel S cafeteria mgr (occupation - managing a cafeteria - an institutional job like Joseph Stanley MCCULLOCH's) S Mtn HS (South Mountain High School [a public educational instituion] 5401 South 7th Street) h (head of household - other relations including children may be present) Apt 2 518 E Roanoke (residence) CR 4-5756". There is no listing for any other WESTCOT including a Richard N. WESTCOT. The residence address is an apartment complex and she is renting the apartment unit. If this is your research subject you could leave a posting at the Message Board for South Mountain High school at Classmates.com asking if anyone remembers her from that era. You can also search the school roster of registered students to see if a WESTCOT was a student there. I have no explanation as to why her middle initial is shown as a "S.", which, of course, could eliminate her from being your research subject OR it could be some sort of transcription error. However, there are virtually no WESTCOT surnames (spelled with a single "T") in any of the directories so it seems rather plausible that this might be your research subject. In my 1957 directory I found the exact same listing as noted above. There were no changes and there is no Richard N. WESTCOT present. This is found on page 1734, right column. Curious enough though is a listing on the same page for a "Westcott Richd (abbreviated for Richard) N accnt (occupation - accountant) Alexander Grant & Co (employer) h 2102 W Cactus Wren Dr WI 3-0283". This could be your research subject but with the last name spelled with two "TT"'s. There is no listing of a spouse and he is renting. In the 1959 directory the Mabel listing is still the same except that her occupation is changed. On page 1825, left column, she is shown as a "tchr Phx Col" (occupation Teacher, employer Phoenix College [a Junior or Community College - a 2 year higher educational institution] 1202 West Thomas Road). There is no Richard N. WESTCOT present. Again, same suggestion as previously, you could leave a posting at the Message Board at Phoenix College to see if any of her students recognize her and occasionally yearbooks for Phoenix College come up for sale on eBay.com. If this is your research subject, it's possible her photo can be found in a yearbook. Further, likely the College librarian has a email address that can probably be found online using Google. If so you could email the librarian to see what archival material they have on former teachers. Now we find a breakthrough. On the same page is "Westcott Richd N (Ida M)(spouse and your research subject) 1 (1 child under age 18 living at home)" with the rest of the listing as found in 1957. This proffers some interesting questions. Is the Mabel S. WESTCOT a relative or a child of Richard and Ida's? Why is Ida not shown in the 1955 directory, did she and Richard marry sometime between 1955 and 1957? Is Mabel S. WESTCOT wholely unrelated and the name composition a mere coincidence? My final directory is 1960 and the listing for Mabel is exactly the same as stated in 1959. The listing can be found on page 1903 right column. Right below Mabel's listing in the same column is the same listing for Richard and Ida with the only change being noted is that Richard is now the owner of 2102 West Cactus Wren Drive. This means that property tax and land record deeds would be available in public record. As they had a child sometime in the 1955 - 1957 era, that child would have turned age 17 between 1972 and 1974 and may be listed at Classmates.com as registered user. You could email the Phoenix Unified School District to inquire as to what high school served 2102 West Cactus Wren Drive in the '72 to '74 era and then you could check that high schools roster at Classmates and also leave a posting at the Message Board to see if any of that WESTCOTT's child classmates will respond with knowledge of that person. As an accountant, Richard N. WESTCOTT would have had to have held a professional license and genealogical records may be available through the Arizona State agency that licenses accountants (Board of Accountancy, 3300 North Central Avenue, Phoenix [1960]). Further, his employer Alexander Grant & Co., CPA's, 336 1st National Bank Building, Phoenix (1960) may have employment records on Richard that may be available. CPA firms in America have gone through significant consolidation over the last 20 years, so it may take a inquiry of the Board of Accountancy to find out what the status of Alexander Grant & Co. is today. There is one Richard WESTCOTT listed in the current Phoenix metro phone book. The listing shows an address of 10739 East Palm Ridge Drive, Scottsdale. Phone 480-473-8295. There is no listing for a Ida M. nor Alexander Grant & Co. I have a few other resources I'll check for you next week and I'll leave a posting. Hope this helps in your research. Glen F. In the 1955 directory, on page 1350, left column is the following listing: "McCulloch Jos (abbreviation for Joseph) S (Eliz H)(spouse - Elizabeth H.) nurse (occupation) Good Samaritan (employer - Good Samaritan Hospital, 1033 McDowell Avenue) h (h - head of household - other relations may be present) 929 W Myrtle Av (residence) WI 3-3913 (telephone - Exchange is WIndsor)". There is no occupation shown for Elizabeth H., nor is there a listing for Ida Mae/Mabel MCCULLOCH, their daughter. The listing does not indicate that he is the property owner, therefore he probably was renting the property. On page 253, left column of the telephone reverse phone directory the phone number WI 3-3913 is confirmed as listed to Joseph S. MCCULLOCH. On page 413, second column from the left of the reverse address directory the address is confimed as being occupied by him in the front and a H. W. GRAEFF is occupying the rear. This further confirms the property address of 929 West Myrtle Avenue is a rental property and also a duplex unit not owned by he or Elizabeth. As mentioned herein, I found no other listings in the other directories for he, Elizabeth or their daughter Ida. I also checked the Maricopa County Recorders office (on-line site with some records viewable) whose records begin for on-line research in 1968. There were no records for Joseph or Elizabeth MCCULLOCH which mirrors the information noted in your posting. At the Arizona County UNKNOWN board a volunteer suggested contacting the Good Samaritan Hospital to see if old personnel records may be available. I would consider pursuing that suggestion insomuch as Joseph is deceased, you are a blood relative and such records might contain some genealogical information of interest to you. You may have to present a death certificate to obtain such records. I also found that the Good Samaritan Hospital had a employees credit union (a bank, savings and small loan entity). H. BALDWIN, a Henry BALDWIN, or a Hank BALDWIN. There are a considerable number of BALDWIN's in Mesa however, but none living on South 40th Street. The only longshot in the BALDWIN listings is for a "A. BALDWIN 1457 East Ironwood Drive, Chandler, 480-963-5816". Chandler is an adjacent community to Mesa, so if you have one of those nationwide cell phones you might try giving this a number a call.
