Very often due to the very poor state of the houses that the folk were living in. And a bonus after demolishing those around the Abbey showed it's true beauty from all angles. But the destruction of, say, the buildings in County Square and the Old Prison behind it was unforgivable. A concrete shopping hall with a multi-story car park replaced them!
