Those members of this list that saw the film Braveheart will remember at the start about this incident. So do any members of the “old” families of Ayrshire and “western” Scotland know if their “Head of clan” changed in this year or not? With the Boyd family, there is some dispute on the date when third Sir Robert Boyd died. So if your family tree had a member died in this year, it may mean that they were killed in this incident by Edward I of England. Thank you Mike Boyd Brisbane, Aust

If the date on the sign beside Mill Vennel, just off the High Street in Ayr, is accurate, this treachery happened on 18 June 1297. The event itself is described as the English killing somewhere between a dozen and 360 Scots. The larger the number here, the more likely it is that Scots going to the meeting called by the English came from well beyond Ayrshire. If it was the intent of the English to catch William Wallace, they failed miserably. He was late to their party! Given the number of clans connected with Ayrshire, there may well have been a number of Scots removed by the English on that fateful day.
