    1. [AYR] Lowlander planted on Kintyre, Southern Argllshire

    3. During my trip to Scotland in October 2012, I found a book in Fort William Library, which mentioned that General Leslie “cleared” Kintyre of its highlanders and that in 1647-8, the Marquis of Argyll, Archibald Campbell took steps to arrange a plantation in the half empty land with families from Ayrshire and Renfrewshire. There was further colonization of Southend in 1669. For some reason The Earl of Argyll in 1685 rebelled against James II of England which led to the Atholl raids. While it does not say so, I suspect these “settlers” were forced to flee Kintyre. So if any of your “families” have disappeared from Ayrshire in any of these dates, you may need to look at southern Argyllshire for your family before they may have moved to Ireland in about 1685. >From 1646, some of these lands was taken up by big Lowland tacksmen or lessees, so the records might be under their names or the Earl of Argyll’s. I hope this will help some of you searching for your family. Mike Boyd Brisbane, Aust.
