My ggg grandfather was James Boyce who married Elizabeth Hamilton. My gg grandfather, also James, son of the above, was born 1825 in Donaghadee, Co Down. He married Mary Dickson/Dickenson in 1845 in Donaghadee. There is Hugh Boyce born 1830 In Donaghadee- parents Hugh Boyce and Elizabeth Hamilton. Did James die after James was born and Elizabeth Hamilton remarry ?- it was custom for a brother to marry his brother's widow Have also seen Hugh Boyce- parents ????? and Elizabeth Hamilton Were there two Elizabeth Hamiltons ?- a common name back then. Hugh, born 1830, has his father as Hugh Boyce on his marriage certificate- he married Jane Murray in 1849. Naming patterns of Hugh and Jane's children suggest Hugh's father was in fact James- but how reliable? Both James and Hugh went to Ayshire in Scotland. Hugh seems to have stayed in Dalry, while James and his sons worked in various iron mines in Ayrshire. I guess we will never know- intriguing.
