    1. [AYR] Who was Christian, neice of Lord Boyd who married David Boyle of Segdeth?
    2. Mike Boyd via
    3. In the book A Genealogical Account of the Principal Families in Ayrshire, more particulary in Cunninghame, Vol. I, George Robertson, 1823, page 131, it said: “XI. Grizel Boyle, who succeeded her father in Kelburn. She marired a near relative David Boyle of Hawkhill, descended from the family thus:- 1. John, second son of No IV. was designed “of Ballahewin” in 1536, married Christian, daughter of Wallace of Cairnhill, by whom he had a son, 2. David of Segdeth in 1578, who married Christian, neice of Lord Boyd, by whom he had, 3. James of Hawkhill, in 1617, who married Margaret, daughter of David Crawfurd of Bedland, by whom he had the above David Boyle of Hawkhill, three sons, and one daughter: 1. John; 2. James of Montgomerieston; 3. Patrick. The daughter was Grizel, and she was married to William Wallace of Shewlton. He died in 1672, and was succeeded by his eldest son, “ Mike Boyd’s notes:- (1) The date 1578. Is this the date that David of Segdeth was born or his marriage date? MY GUESS, from the way this is written, it is David’s date of birth. So do others agree or disagree! (2) “neice of Lord Boyd”. Is this term, as we understand it today, that she would be the daughter of this Lord Boyd’s brother or sister? Or could it mean that she was a more distant relative? This will need to be worked out to determine which Boyd Cadet Branch this Christian belonged to. (3) “David of Segdeth in 1578, who married Christian, neice of Lord Boyd”. The second problem is to determine WHAT TIME PERIOD we might be talking about. Is it 1578 – when it is assumed that David was born - or some later period when she was married in about 1615? (4) If the time period is 1578, this would mean that “Lord Boyd” was “Robert Boyd, fifth Lord Boyd, bc 1517, d 1589”. This Lord Boyd only had a sister, Margaret Boyd, whom Burke’s said married John Montgomerie of Lainshaw, the third son of the first Earl of Earl of Eglinton, eldest son John Montgomery. However, they did not have any children, so the “neice Christian” could not come from this Margaret Boyd. Or does it mean that this Lord Robert Boyd had more than one sibling? (5) However, if we are talking about 1615. This would put it in the period of the Robert Boyd, seventh Lord Boyd, (1595 – 1628), who succeed his grandfather. This Lord Boyd, is listed as only having a brother James Boyd who became the 9th Lord Boyd and he had no daughters that married a Boyle. So I can only conclude that this “neice Christian” was more distant than a single generation from which ever Lord Boyd was being referred to. (6) The next problem is Christian’s surname, Boyd or some other name? So are there any David Boyle of Segdeth (in 1578) researchers out there. (7) When I looked at the International Genealogical Index for the UK (1994 edition), I could not find any entry for a “Christian Boyd” even though there were entries for Christian Boyd prior to 1600 A. D. However, I did find few entries with Boyle. Katherine BOYD (F).........
