John you have two choices - well three - that he moved outside of Kilmarnock after 1863. So what other areas might he have moved to - Glasgow and Lanarkshire? Secondly that he died at Kilmarnock. Or Thirdly, that he migrated? In this "period" there seems to have been recruitment of Ayrshire miners to the USA to such States as, PA, MD and West VA, so it may be worth checking these States for him in their 1870 Census. Hopefully there will be online. Oh htere may have also meem some movement to BC, Canada as ewll. There have been some stories of miners going to the USA in recent months, so hopefully these people can advise you a little better than I have.
