    3. I am seeking assistance with tracing my 3xgreat grandfather William MCLELLAN. I believe him to be the William McLELLAN born 21 Jul 1796 Beith, Ayrshire and baptised 24 Jul 1796 Beith, Ayrshire; a son of John MCLELLAN and Margaret CRAIG. William died on 12 May 1883 at Geilston, Cardross, Dunbarton; his death certificate recording that he was formerly a gamekeeper, married first to Margaret COCHRAN, second to Margaret PAUL, and third to Ann ALLAN; and that his father was John McLELLAN, horse dealer, deceased, and mother Elizabeth (sic - not Margaret) McLELLAN maiden surname CRAIG, deceased. The informant was Martha, one of his daughters. I believe that he married Margaret COCHRANE 4 Jul 1823 Dunlop, Ayrshire; and that they had Agnes MCLELLAN (17 Jul 1824 Dunlop), John MCLELLAN (6 Apr 1826 Dunlop), Elisabeth MCLELLAN (13 Mar 1828 Dunlop), and John MCLELLAN (19 Jul 1830 Dunlop). He married Margaret PAUL 13 Sep 1833 Fintry, Stirling. My 2xgreat grandfather - also William McLELLAN, was born about 1832 in Fenwick Ayrshire (according to the 1881 census which is the only one that I have found him listed in where there is a parish of birth shown). I don't know whether his mother was Margaret COCHRAN or Margaret PAUL, as I have not yet found a baptism entry around 1832/1833; but on both his marriage (1857) and on his death (1888) his mother is shown as Margaret McLELLAN maiden surname COCHRAN. However, there is a baptism recorded in the parish register of Cardross Dumbartonshire which records "William the lawful son of William McLELLAN and Margaret PAULl was born at Drumfork 12 Jan and baptised 13 Feb 1837". William McLELLAN and Margaret PAUL also had Helen MCLELLAN (1835), Martha MCLELLAN (1836 Fintry), Marion Campbell MCLELLAN (23 Nov 1838 Cardross), Mary Campbell MCLELLAN (24 Jan 1841 Cardross). I have located William in the 1841 census at Camis Eskan High, Cardross; and in 1881 at Main Road, Cardoss. I have been unable to trace him in 1851, 1861, or 1871 census records, and have been unable to find the deaths of Margaret COCHRAN or Margaret PAUL, or his marriage to Ann ALLAN. Any assistance and/or ideas for further research will be most welcome. Kind regards, Ed
