    3. 17 editorial - Capt W L Gilchrist...; -1923 ph/died Nov 20 at Nanaimo, BC, William Law Gilchrist, one of the best known seafaring men in BC. Aged 59, native of Ayrshire, Sct, he came here 40 yrs ago, and had been bound up with development of marine activity ever since. In his youth in England he served in RN, having Admiral Jellicoe as a young officer in his class of torpedo instruction at one time, he served in many waters and through the Egyptian campaign. For his participation in Egypt he was awarded the Khedive's medal and star, being then but 15. In 1891 he came to Esquimalt with a destroyer squadron, and subsequently made his home on this coast... On 1st coming to Victoria his naval training led him to take an interest in service matters here, with the result that he spent the summer under canvas at Macaulay Pnt with the Victoria Royal Garrison Artillery, the unit commanded by late Col E G Prior, and which afterwards became 5th Reg, CGA, of present day. ... [Colonist, 1923-11-21, p. 4] Died Nov 20, 1925 at Victoria, BC, Margaret, wife of John Richmond, 68, native of Ayrshire, Sct, resident here 38 years. Also leaves son, brothers [Ross) sister. ROBP [Colonist, 1925-11-18*] Died Nov 7, 1926 at Saanich, BC, Mrs Jessie (McKay) Livesley, 84, born in Ayrshire, Sct, resident of BC 40 years. Leaves 3 sons, 2 daughters [Mrs Robert Dunsmuir, Jasper, AB]. Pallbearers: A Thomson, D Campbell, A E Fraser, J Gillespie. ROBP [Colonist, 1926-11-07*] Private D D Weir, Killed in Action, 50th Highlanders, drafted with 16th Battery. Aged 24, sister, Mrs P J Campbell lives at Victoria. May 27, 3 - native of Ayrshire, Scotland. He came to Victoria 1912, with his sister. Was made Sgt, but on re-org of Regiment at Valcartier, when non-comm officers places were filled by men who had had active service, returned to his original place as Private. Previous to war he took active part in rifle competitions at Clover point... [Colonist, 1915-05-26] Private Donald McNicol, Missing in Action, native of England, aged 30, spent several years in Victoria. He served for 3 years with Ayrshire Imperial Yeomanry. Farmer, lived on Tolmie road farm, enlisted with 50th Gordon Highlanders, left with 1st Contingent. Jun 6, 5 - reported Prisoner of War according to word received by his sister at Victoria, from relatives in Scotland. Dec 14, 5 - photo No 2 Co, 16th Battalion, Prisoner of War at Kriegsgefangenenlager, Giessen, received by Miss J McNicol, Victoria. Her brother, Private Donald McNicol, stands at L. He left Victoria Aug 1914, with 50th Regiment. [Colonist, 1915-05-18, p. 2]
