Regarding John Gemmell and Mary Johnstone I have found that a John Gemmell son of William Gemmell a weaver purchased land from William Forbes of Callender (sasine dated 11th July 1804). This land is behind Main Street in Newton on Ayr where Clunes Vennal is situated and Clunes Vennal was called Gemmell's Land in the 1851 or 1861 census where you will find several of our family lived. From this I believe James Gemmell married to Janet Bruce would be the son of John Gemmell and grandson of William Gemmell. John Gemmell died on friday 17th June 1836 of frailty aged 88 (OPRs)he was a Freeman of Newton on Ayr, Mary Johnstone wife of John Gemmell (carter) died on saturday 21st January 1826 at Newton (OPRs). When he married John was recorded as a weaver he must have progressed to a carter at some point and his son James became a fisherman, as a Freeman of Newton John Gemmell would have fishing rights explaining why son James became a fisherman. I am descended from James Gemmell and Janet Bruce their 3rd son James Gemmell who married Flora Morrison are my GGGrandparents, who are you descended from? I have identified 10 children of James and Janet and their families with the exception of Mary Gemmell born on 5th May 1812, could she be your line? Kind regards Bill Heron Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
