My thanks to Bill, Heather and Irene for their very quick response to my query re the above occupation (Free Stow) shown on the 1841 census. As they have suggested, my grt grandfather was no doubt a "freestone cutter" working in a quarry - the 1851 census indicates he was a "labourer/quarrier". I am grateful to all for your help.
