The 1851. census that i see the family on is Carsphairn, Kirkcudbright, ie. Gordon Murray, Arg Laboure, M. age 41 years,M. born Sanquhar, Dumfries, Anne Murray, Wife, F. age 42 years, M. born Durrisdeer, Dumfries, Agnes Murray, Dau, F. age 24 years, U. born Durrisdeer, Dumfries, James Murray, son, M. age 23 years, U. born Carspharin, Dumfries, Robert Murray, son, M. age 21 years, U. born Durrisdeer, Dumfries, Grace Murray, Daur, F. age 19 years, born Penpont, Dumfries, Gordon Murray, son, M. age 12 years, born Penpont, Dumfries, Alexander Murray, son M. age 8 years, born Sanquhar, Dumfries, John Murray, son, M. age 6 years, born Durrisdeer, Dumfries, William Murray, son, M. age 3 years, born, Carspharin, Kirkcudbright. There are only three births registered to this couple, ie Agnes Murray, 2/Oct/1826, Durisdeer, Dumfries, Robert Murray, 28/Feb/1830, Durisdeer, Dumfries, William Murray, 25/June/1847, Carsphairn. All to parents Gordon Murray, and Ann Dempster. These three births date, places, fit perfect with three of the children in above census. Agnes, being the oldest, and William, the youngest, then Ann Dempster, is Gordon Murray's, partner from at least 1826. until 1851, and most certainly the mother of all the children on the census. However as happened in Scotland, prior to 1855. when compulsary registration of Births, Marriages, and Deaths, occured, it was not compulsary to register these events prior to 1855. I can find no marriage in Scotland, for Gordon, and Ann Dempster, thats not to say it did not occur, lots of old documents did not survive the ravages of time, the same applies to the births of the other children.
