Hi Nyle and everyone Would you please tell me what period the below book covers and where I could source it in NZ. I have recently 'discovered' that my GGGrandfather John Arnot came from Beith, Ayr, at least thats the place of birth he gave in the 1851 Census. The only John Arnot born in Ayr around that date (taken from an IGI on the LDS site) was in 1797 to a Thomas Arnot and an Isobel Wallace. I have not been able to find his birth entry in the Parish Records available on ScotlandsPeople or any marriage entry for his parents Thomas and Isobel. From his census records his birth is nearer to 1801 but because his oldest son is named Thomas and his second daughter named Isabel I am inclined to think these might be my Johns parents. I have not been able to find Thomas Arnot and Isobel Walllaces marriage record on ScotlandsPeople, or their birth records (having searched the LDS site also) As A result I have come to a dead end and I would really appreciate it if someone could suggest where to search next. Chris I bought my copy of the SAFHS publication on-line from the SAFHS website. I suggest you try NZSG library if you are a member, or your local genealogy branch, or local LDS family history centre. You will get the same information free from Scotland's People and the National Archives of Scotland websites. But here are the available registers for Beith as listed in the SAFHS publication... and the actual records from these registers should be available on Scotland's People. But you will find the registers are far from being a complete record of BDM's for the period. Either people didn't bother registering or the records have been lost. Births 1661-1694, 1701-1854: Marriages 1659-1854, 1820-1854: Deaths 1783-1787: Re your Arnot family. Pigots directory 1825/26... A James Argot (poss Arnot) was a bookseller and stationer in Main Street. Pigots directory 1837... Agnes Arnot, Catherine Arnot were booksellers and stationers in Main Street. Catherine Arnot was a milliner and dressmaker in Main Street. Jane Arnot was a straw hat maker in Main Street. The post mistress was Catherine Arnott but in the 1825-26 Pigots the post mistress was Catherine Alexander. Perhaps the same Catherine but married to ? Arnot/t by 1837. Not sure if they will help you, but best I can think of at the moment. The Arnots do not appear on the Beith 1691 Hearth tax record so were not a long established family in Beith and the best you can hope for is they came very late to Beith from an area with far better record coverage.
