I have worked backwards from my Grandfather to find John with the help of birth, marriage and death certs and the census's. On Sept 14th 1822 he married Agnes McGilchrist in Campsie, Stirling, Scotland. His first son was named Thomas and his second daughter was named Isabel. In the 1851 census it records his age as 49 years and his birth place as "Ayeshire, Beath". The only John born in Ayeshire recorded in Scotlands People around that time was born in 1797 to Thomas Arnot and Isobel Wallace. The "Beath" has been misspelt should be "Bieth" if its the Ayeshire one. And the year 1797 is a few years off compared to the age he gives in the census. But because of his childrens names following the Scottish naming pattern I am inclined to believe that this John Arnot born 1797 might be my John. I am hoping that there are other decendents of John Arnot out there searching and would really appreciate any suggestions of other ways I could search for him. Family legend has it that he was a farmer, but both the 1841 in Campsie and 1851 census in the Parish/District of Cumbernauld.County Dunbarton, have him down as a limestone miner.
