Hi Chris. Here is one definition of "lair" from the online Dictionary of the Scots Language at http://www.dsl.ac.uk/dsl/index.html: 4. A burial-place or -site. a. A grave or tomb. b. Chiefly, a space or plot reserved as burial-space by a person or family in a church or graveyard. I've cited this database several times in the past and should have included the sources from which it is taken. They are: (1) The 12-volume "Dictionary of the Older Scottish Tongue" compiled over the period 1931-2002, which contains information about Scots words in use from the twelfth to the end of the seventeenth centuries (Older Scots). The first editor of this series was Sir William Craigie, who was also the third Editor of the Oxford English Dictionary. (2) The 10-volume "Scottish National Dictionary" compiled over the period 1931-1976, which contains information about Scots words in use from 1700 to the 1970s (modern Scots). The first editor was William Grant. The digitization of these volumes into the Dictionary of the Scots Language was done at the University of Dundee between the years 2001 and 2004. This database undoubtedly, in my view, is the most extensive and reliable source for authentic definitions from both Old Scots and the "modern" Scots language.
