The "extra" t could easily creep in/fall off as spelling wasn't standardised as it is today, so in my family Car became Kerr in one step, and Sinclair became Sinkler for a generation, as it was written as it sounded (ie in broad Aberdonian). When searching it's well worth thinking way putside the box when it comes to spelling.
